Hands On Portland
Architects in Schools Virtual Summer Camp (age 18+) *referral* Support youth in a virtual summer camp to guide students through hands‑on design activities while inspiring the next generation to think creatively about sustainable, resilient communities. About the Program At AFO, we are passionate about the future of the built environment in Oregon. The best way to ensure we have great places to live, work and play is to ensure that future generations are exposed to the importance of design and creative problem solving. The Architects in Schools (AiS) program aims to do just that: introduce the youngest Oregonians to the power and possibilities of design with the end goal of creating lifelong learners and critical thinkers who have a voice in their community. About the Project Connect with youth ages 8-12 from June 22-26 as they learn what small things they can do in their community to make it more sustainable and resilient! This year’s camp theme is Small Changes = BIG IMPACT, Designing Sustainable and Resilient Communities. Camp participants will learn about ways they can use design to support some of our smallest community members - birds and bugs! Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing, planning, model making, and more. By implementing the design process, they will make small changes in their community that create a BIG impact! All volunteer positions will occur virtually over Zoom . You will have the opportunity to directly interact with youth participating in the camp. We are seeking design and building professionals and college students who are passionate about sharing their expertise on design. Volunteers should feel comfortable talking through the design process and about their experience as a professional or college student in the design and building industry. Volunteers will help lead students through camp activities that involve all steps of the design process: brainstorming, researching, sketching, planning, and building a habitat for a client. Volunteers will have the opportunity to guide camp participants through the entire design process to brainstorm, imagine, plan, and build a habitat for a beneficial bird or bug. Volunteers will share their passion for design and sustainability while inspiring students to take on the role of an architect, engineer, and contractor. Volunteers will practice leadership and facilitation while leading a virtual breakroom of students ages 8-12. You can sign‑up for as many sessions as you like during the week. Please use this form to sign‑up directly with the Architecture Foundation of Oregon: Age: Volunteers must be at least 18 yrs. old Notices Referral Opportunity: This opportunity is run directly by one of our nonprofit partners. After you express interest, the partner will contact you with next steps and confirmation details.
