Sensitive Position: Yes Overview The Chief of Police will plan, develop, organize, actuate, direct, and manage law enforcement programs that will ensure the protection of college property and facilities, detection and prevention of criminal activity, enforcement of traffic and parking rules, and enforcement of rules protecting faculty, staff, students, visitors and the general public. The Police Chief is responsible for direction, planning, organization, staffing, and control of patrol officers, security officers and other subordinates within the Department of Police & Public Safety. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May assist the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor. Key Qualifications Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent computer, word‑processing, and spreadsheet skills. Ability to remain calm in emergency situations. Demonstrated ability to comprehend and interpret written instructions and solve complex problems independently. Strong knowledge of investigative techniques and practices; considerable knowledge of Virginia and applicable federal laws. Working knowledge of administrative functions in policy and police supervision. Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and crisis‑management techniques, including crime prevention, investigation, suspect apprehension, disaster management, and reporting. Knowledge of leadership principles and management techniques. High moral character. Effective multitasking, planning, and organization skills. Ability to carry equipment and cover extensive campus areas on foot. Customer‑service oriented teamwork and problem resolution skills. Virginia DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services) LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) Certification required within one year of hiring. Basic law‑enforcement certification from a certified police‑training academy in Virginia. Valid Virginia driver’s license. Certification or completion of required first‑aid training, including CPR and AED. VCIN (Virginia Criminal Information Network) certification required within one year of hiring. Experience with public safety/emergency‑management software (e.g., emergency notification systems, access control, surveillance, incident reporting). Graduation from high school or equivalent, with police leadership and supervisory training related to the duties of the position. Qualification in firearm use with a minimum score of 80% and training in OC spray. Experience in security and public safety at a college or university. National Incident Management System (NIMS) training certifications (ICS‑100 to 800). Completion of first‑line supervisory and/or mid‑management law‑enforcement training/course of study.
