Library Assistant - TEMPORARY Part Time

Statement of Primary Purpose

The purpose of the Library Assistant is to serve as the primary staff person at the information desk providing knowledgeable services to users including basic demonstration in the use of library resources, troubleshooting of computers and printers, facilitating the technology lending process, answering phone, email and chat and referring more complex research questions to a Librarian as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

· Primary staff person serving users at the information desk and in charge of circulation duties such as circulation of library materials; maintaining records for lost materials and student holds; basic public computer and printer troubleshooting. Responsible for opening the Library.

o Follow circulation processes and procedures.

o Provide quality control of circulation functions such as creating and managing the weekly “overdue” notices reports process and utilizing texting software to send out overdue notices to students. Organize, maintain and inventory library supplies. Ability to use library systems is required, specifically:

· Software such as LibGuides, Evergreen or other Library Management Systems and Summon (or similar) discovery tools.

· Spreadsheets for basic data collection and reporting. 

o Manage technology lending processes and procedures including cleaning, organizing,and maintaining technology items.

o Email, call and text students with long overdue technology items.

o Prepare and share a list of students with long overdue technology items with the Library Director for final follow up.

o Provide basic research and reference information, referring complex research questions to the Library Director when appropriate.

o Contribute to timely shelving of materials. Organize materials using the Library of Congress classification shelving system and ability to explain and demonstrate its use. Accuracy and attention to detail in shelving and shelf-reading.

· Represent Southwestern Community College with a collegial, service-oriented presence.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

An Associate Degree or 1 year experience working in education or an academic or public library is required.

Physical Demands

· Must be able to physically perform the basic functions of grasping, light lifting, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions and communicating

· Must have the ability to shelve and shift books and other library materials on the shelves and to push and pull up to 30 pounds for loaded book carts.
