Key Job Responsibilities Collaborate with and provide statistical services to Principal Investigators, Research Scientists, Research Nurses, and other related research staff, applying biostatistics to sophisticated research projects. Apply theoretical knowledge to solve unusual or highly sophisticated problems. Develop and implement a variety of sophisticated biostatistics applications. Provide reporting to internal customers, external customers, and public reporting agencies; interact with research scientists, database managers, study coordinators and data entry clerks in analyzing sophisticated results, interpreting biostatistical findings, and gathering information for program formulation. Provide statistical analysis and programming support for the medical research area. Analyze medical research data: meet with investigators, define scope of work, estimate time, develop an analysis plan, implement appropriate statistical methods using statistical software, report and interpret findings, review study design, and determine sample size and power. Offer statistical services including data management, data analysis, and database design. Serve as a statistical consultant to the Institutional Review Board. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Provide statistical and analytical services, and programming support to researchers, clinicians, management, clinical areas, and for medical research. Interact and advise investigators in translating scientific questions into meaningful, statistically testable hypotheses. Define the scope of work and propose an analytical plan with a time estimate. Provide statistical expertise in the design of sophisticated experiments and studies, research proposal development, sample size determination, randomization procedures, and plans for interim and final analysis. Recommend appropriate statistical analyses for clinical outcomes and research questions. Execute a variety of highly sophisticated statistical analyses for projects using appropriate statistical and computing methodologies, and present results clearly. Summarize and interpret analysis findings for written reports and participate in writing statistical sections of manuscripts, publications, presentations, grant applications, and protocols. Provide monthly statistical reviews for all projects submitted to the General Clinical Research Center Scientific Advisory Committee. Review the integrity and statistical soundness of all studies involving human subjects or animals by participating in Research Review Committees and Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees. Offer ex officio service on IRB committees and review IRB submissions for acceptability of sample size justifications. Collaborate with the Clinical Research Office in protocol development, and the monitoring and reporting of clinical data. Critically review and summarize methods described in statistical literature and implement them into operational computer applications using appropriate programming languages. Participate in professional meetings to ensure positive representation at local, national and international levels. Educate others about biostatistics and bioinformatics through mentoring and teaching colleagues, investigators, fellows, and graduate students. Coordinate and teach formal biostatistics courses, interdisciplinary courses, continuing education courses, and seminars. Interact with investigators and database architects in the development of complex research databases, providing statistical expertise. Conduct biostatistical methodology research and publish in reputable peer‑reviewed journals to improve the existing bodies of knowledge in theoretical and applied statistics. Provide advice on questionnaire design, database design, data screens, documentation, data formats, data dictionary, custom data entry checks, or custom programming services. Construct, clean or manage databases, coordinate with internal or external collaborators to acquire data from multiple sources, and write programs to manage and prepare data for statistical analyses. Educational Requirements Master's degree in Biostatistics, bioinformatics, or a relevant field such as genetics or epidemiology. Doctorate degree preferred. Experience 8 years of experience with computer proficiency, solid understanding of spreadsheets, and presentation development. Experience with reporting tools such as Brio, Crystal, Access or SPSS. Experience in research statistics, model development, regression analysis, and statistical tests. Expertise in relational databases (Oracle, PL/SQL, SQL). Demonstrated understanding of data/information quality principles and practices. Experience with statistical software (SAS, SPSS, S‑PLUS, STATA, SYSTAT, Mplus). 8 years of programming experience in an acute care hospital or another health‑care delivery setting with knowledge of healthcare administrative, financial, and coding data.
