Grounds WorkerWork Year: 12 monthsHours: 6am to 2:30pm, Tuesday through Saturday (Daily schedule may be adjusted to meet program needs)Salary Information: Range 22Basic Functions: To perform grounds maintenance and gardening work as assigned for the District. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a departmental director or designee within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job performs a variety of general grounds gardening and maintenance duties in the upkeep of assigned school sites and related areas.Typical DutiesPlants, cultivates, prunes, shapes, trims, waters and sprays trees, shrubs, hedges and plantsPlants, fertilizes, waters, mows, and cares for lawnsOperates hand and power tools and equipment including power mowers, edgers, sweepers, riding mowers and other grounds maintenance equipment/toolsUses hand tools to work soil and to remove weeds, undergrowth and debris from school grounds and landscaped areasSweeps walks and driveways and picks up paper, rubbish and other debrisApplies pesticides and herbicides to grounds and garden areas for pest/weed control purposesCleans sprinklers and sprinkler systems and assists in the installation and repair of sprinkler systemsCleans and maintains drainage areas; cleans gutters and roofsPrepares athletic fields for scheduled events by mowing and lining fields with chalk lines for specific sporting eventsPerforms general grounds maintenance work such as removing and replacing fences posts and signsAbility to drive dump truck and/or tractor as assigned; operated a fork lift as assignedAbility to maintain hoses, supplies, tools and equipment in proper condition and repairAbility to move furniture as assignedAbility to assist with a variety of general custodial and maintenance duties as assignedAbility to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may occasionally lift up to 100 poundsPerforms other duties consistent with job descriptionEmployment StandardsPossession of a valid California Driver's LicenseKnowledge of grounds keeping and gardening methods and practicesKnowledge of the safe use, maintenance and operation of grounds keeping tools and power equipmentAbility to effectively and safely use hand and power tools associated with grounds keeping and gardening workAbility to understand and follow both oral and written instructionsAbility to read and write at a level necessary to perform required duties successfullyAbility to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required dutiesAbility to meet the physical requirement of the job.
