Food Services Worker

This role supports a busy food service operation by ensuring all dishes, utensils, and small equipment are cleaned, sanitized, and stored properly, while maintaining a safe and sanitary dish room and service area. The food services worker performs opening and closing duties, supports meal service, assists with inventory handling, and upholds high standards of cleanliness and sanitation to help the unit run efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

• Perform opening duties, including setting up the dish machine, preparing bus tubs for soaking utensils and silverware, laying out floor mats, and immediately washing any pans or utensils requested by cooks.
• Wash any dishes, pans, or utensils in the dish room upon arrival for the shift to ensure readiness for service.
• During serving hours, spray bowls and plates, fill glass racks, clean dishes and silverware, scrub pots and pans, and return all items to their proper locations.
• Periodically bleach coffee cups as requested by management to maintain sanitation standards.
• Sweep and mop service areas and the dining room to keep floors clean and safe.
• Vacuum floor mats to remove debris and maintain a clean work environment.
• Perform closing duties, including cleaning and putting away all dishes, pots, pans, silverware, and utensils.
• Roll up rubber mats, run them through the dish machine, and place them on the cart after cleaning.
• Disassemble and spray the dish machine, rinse screens, and thoroughly clean the machine components as required.
• Spray and wipe counters, carts, and belts, and spray under the machine and counters with a hose to remove food residue and debris.
• Scrub the back sink, clean the track and trap under the belt, and squeegee the dish room floor to maintain a safe and sanitary area.
• Regularly perform sanitation duties such as cleaning walls, the inside and outside of machines, counters, belts, carts, and floors.
• Uphold general sanitation practices when washing utensils, chinaware, and other service items.
• Assist in loading and unloading inventory and supplies to support kitchen and service operations.
• Assist in preparing food items for catering and perform other utilitarian tasks related to the unit as needed.
• Break down boxes and dispose of them properly to keep storage and work areas organized.
• Maintain adequate levels of cleaning chemicals for daily use and ensure they are stored and handled safely.
• Remove used grease to the proper location in accordance with safety and sanitation procedures.
• Empty all trash cans regularly and sweep and mop floors to maintain cleanliness.
• Periodically remove lime buildup on the inside of the dish machine and other liquid receptacles to ensure efficient operation.
• Maintain the dish room and dish machine in a sanitary and efficient manner at all times.
• Ensure all dishes, trays, utensils, cups, and small equipment are thoroughly cleaned, sanitized to high standards, and properly stored.
• Assist coworkers with general cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing to support overall unit cleanliness.
• Perform other duties as assigned to help the unit run efficiently and effectively.

Essential Skills

• Ability to perform all essential dishwashing and utility duties, including operating a dish machine and handling cleaning tasks, to a satisfactory standard.
• Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and recognize similarities and differences between words and series of words.
• Ability to communicate in English in order to understand basic requirements, instructions, and requests from employees of the organization.
• Capability to work safely around moving mechanical parts, slick or wet floors, hot water, hot surfaces, and cleaning supplies.
• Attention to detail in cleaning, sanitizing, and properly storing dishes, utensils, cups, trays, and small equipment.
• Reliability in following opening, serving, and closing procedures consistently.
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift and move dish racks, trays, and supplies, and perform repetitive cleaning tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working as a dishwasher or utility worker in a food service environment is helpful.
• Familiarity with commercial dish machines and basic sanitation practices in kitchens or dining facilities.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities during meal service.
• Willingness to assist with inventory handling, catering preparation, and general utility tasks as needed.
• Ability to follow safety and sanitation guidelines and maintain a clean and organized work area.

Work Environment

The work environment is a busy food service operation that relies on commercial dish machines and cleaning equipment. While performing duties, you are frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and potentially slick or wet floors, and occasionally to hot water, hot surfaces, and cleaning supplies. The noise level is usually moderate. The role requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and performing repetitive motions throughout the shift. Multiple schedule options are available, including full-time evening shifts such as Monday to Friday 6:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with weekends off; Wednesday to Sunday 6:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with Monday and Tuesday off; and Thursday to Monday 6:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with Tuesday and Wednesday off. Part-time schedules include Thursday to Sunday 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., as well as a schedule of Saturday and Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The environment emphasizes cleanliness, sanitation, and safe work practices at all times.

This is a Contract position based out of New Ulm, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $12.00 - $15.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
