Registered Nurse – Blood Cancer Treatment Room, Durham, NC Location: Durham, NC Requisition Number: 233535 | Position Type: Regular Job Summary The Duke Blood Cancer Center Day Hospital provides comprehensive, high‑acuity care for adult Hematology‑Oncology, Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant, and CAR‑T therapy patients. As a Registered Nurse, you will deliver nursing care, administer intravenous therapies (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy), manage transplant support, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to optimize patient outcomes. Unit Overview The day hospital operates 365 days a year, with 56 treatment spaces, caring for 60‑100 patients daily on weekdays and 15‑30 on weekends. Key Responsibilities Plan, provide, supervise, and document professional nursing care using the nursing process, following physician orders and established policies. Use professional nursing judgment to individualize plans of care based on patient assessment and response to treatment. Delegate tasks and supervise licensed and unlicensed care providers. Act as team leader or charge nurse for patient groups or entire unit as assigned. Monitor environment of care, initiating corrective action as needed. Participate in professional development and maintain required competencies. Serve as preceptor and support development of staff and learners. Identify and engage in clinical and operational performance improvement opportunities. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Procedures and Treatments Performed Active stem cell/ bone marrow transplant (autologous, allogeneic, cord blood) using Spectra Optia (PBSC collection). CAR‑T therapy patient care, both before and after cell reinfusion. High‑dose and investigational chemotherapy for Multiple Myeloma, Leukemias, Lymphomas, scleroderma, etc. Supportive care: blood product transfusions, symptom management, hydration, electrolyte supplementation, non‑oncology medication administration, therapeutic phlebotomy. Apheresis cell collection (Spectra Optia) for autologous and donor PBSC as well as donor lymphocytes. Extracorporeal Photopheresis (Cellex) for graft‑versus‑host disease, solid organ transplant rejection, cutaneous T‑cell lymphoma, mycosis fungoides and sezer syndrome. Required Certifications BLS (required), ACLS (preferred) ONS Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy certification (within 3 months of hire) Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification (within 2 years of hire) Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of RN scope and nursing process application. Proficiency in BLS and other specialized life‑support requirements designated by the work area. Ability to assess, plan, document, and evaluate patient status using computer and paper tools. Working knowledge of Spectra Optia and Cellex machines and associated regulations. Understanding of FACT (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy) requirements. Excellent communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team. Strong organizational and multitasking skills, including prolonged standing and walking. Ability to work collaboratively and independently to meet patient needs. Minimum Qualifications Education: BSN from an accredited program required; exception for RNs hired between July 1 2014 and April 11 2021 without a BSN, who must enroll within two years and complete within five years. RNs hired before July 1 2014 are not required to enroll in a BSN. Experience: Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience required; six months may be acceptable at manager’s discretion for exceptional performers. Licensure, Certifications: Current RN licensure in North Carolina; BLS required.
