Associate Underwriter, Financial Institutions

The primary purpose of this position is to support the underwriting function through customer service and rating and processing of underwriting files. Operate within assigned level of authority. May participate in structured underwriting training events and programs to increase skill set.

Responsibilities

• Review, analyze, accept, and decline Financial Institution underwriting risks to ensure profitability for Markel;
• Manage the existing renewal book and implement corrective measures, as needed, to meet profitability expectations;
• Communicate with regional managers and national; Financial Institution product line leaders on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate;
• Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required;
• Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers while simultaneously monitoring the entire appointed producer base for profitability and production;
• Review forms and pricing of competitors and be able to effectively market the Markel product within the competitive landscape;
• Provide training or technical assistance to department underwriting support staff.

Qualifications

• 1+ year of Financial Institution underwriting or relevant industry experience required
• Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility;
• Demonstrated marketing and relationship building skills;
• Four-year college degree and/or working on insurance designations preferred;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Superb technology skills to include MS Office and underwriting systems;
• Strong analytical and organizational skills;
• Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment with a desire to succeed.

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Associate Underwriter position is $33.15 - $45.58/hour with 15% incentive.
