Classification FLSA Status: N/A (Exempt) (Faculty Position) All full‑time faculty work a four‑quarter academic year under a quarterly or one‑year contract. Primary Function Faculty members provide effective instruction and student advisement for the Doctor of Chiropractic degree program. Duties include activities representing instruction, scholarship and service to the college and community. Key Responsibilities Instruction. Provide students an effective guided educational experience in the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic, culminating in a smooth transition from student intern to Doctor of Chiropractic. Contribute to the development of the student’s knowledge, skills, attitudes and competence in the location, analysis and correction of the vertebral subluxation. Assist with the development and implementation of the educational program to meet established standards and desired outcomes. Keep abreast of current best practices in course design and educational technology integration. Collaborate with the Department of Teaching and Learning to foster enhancements in teaching methodologies and student learning. Keep abreast of current events, trends, research and literature within the subject matter of the courses assigned. Continuously update and reference course content. Provide a challenging curriculum and a supportive learning environment. Prepare and administer valid student assessments that accurately measure course objectives and represent the rigor commensurate with the preparation of a Doctor of Chiropractic. Provide ongoing instructional feedback (and remediation as needed) to students. Prepare and submit quarterly syllabi, midterm and final examinations to the Office of Academic Affairs. Exhibit and role‑model a communication style that projects a professional image. Participate as an examiner, proctor or exam materials writer for the Clinic Entrance Exam and/or the Clinical Proficiency Examination (Exit Exam) as requested. Assist in providing fully stocked, clean classrooms and report equipment malfunctions to the respective dean. Meet faculty responsibilities as outlined in the Faculty Handbook. Commit to the mission of Sherman College in any way correlated to the position. Professional Development / Scholarship Participate in activities that enhance individual, personal and professional growth. Acquire new skills for program enhancement and development, such as the utilization of technology for course enhancement and administration. Set annual professional goals that contribute to the attainment of college goals and objectives. Submit, to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, annual assessment reports detailing activities relative to meeting college and professional goals and objectives. Actively engage in the continuous improvement of teaching and learning through scholarship, classroom innovation, collaboration and peer review. Utilize individual and college‑wide outcomes information (evaluations) for ongoing development of professional effectiveness and the educational program. Demonstrate student learning outcomes and identify deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitude in the assigned discipline or topic. Prepare and submit assessments of learner objectives and results for each course annually to the appropriate dean. Modify curriculum and/or teaching style based on assessment results and professional development experiences, documenting modifications. Maintain certificates and/or licenses necessary for employment eligibility. Post and maintain student office hours. Provide coverage for responsibilities during foreseen absences. Service to the College and Community Demonstrate responsibility for shared governance by participating in the Faculty Senate and college committees. Serve as a faculty mentor to assigned students and faculty members. Support college policies and fellow faculty in the presence of students and support personnel. Provide questions for National Board examinations when assigned to teach in applicable areas. Participate in the evaluative process for self, department and program. Attend commencement exercises, faculty meetings, committee meetings and the annual Lyceum as required. Essential Knowledge and Skills Doctor of Chiropractic degree. A strong desire to share the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic with future doctors of chiropractic. Required degree within the specific teaching discipline. Three years of full‑time chiropractic practice and/or teaching experience preferred; additional qualifications may be considered. Strong organizational and supervisory skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to be assertive and maintain classroom decorum. Computer proficiency in MS Office, learning management systems and effective use of smart room equipment. Workload Expectations and Physical Demands For each primary teaching contact hour per week, approximately one hour of preparation time— including office hours, service and scholarly activity—is expected. For each secondary teaching contact hour, approximately one‑half hour of preparation time is expected. Work can be performed at home or at school, except for required on‑campus office hours. A full‑time faculty load is defined as 40 hours per week. Primary Classroom Faculty: 12–16 hours of direct interaction, 12–16 hours of indirect student interaction/course or curriculum development, and 8–16 hours of professional development, research and scholarly activities. Secondary Classroom Faculty: 28 hours of direct interaction, 6 hours of indirect student interaction, 6 hours of professional development, research and scholarly activity. Faculty may overload each term up to 120% of a full‑time load with approval. Physical Demands While performing the duties, the employee may walk, stand, crouch, kneel, stoop, sit, use hands to manipulate objects, reach, talk and hear. Vision requirements include close and distance vision with the ability to adjust focus. Carrying or lifting up to 25 lbs may be required. Work Environment The employee works in a controlled environment; the noise level is usually minimal.
