About the Department
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Anthropology Department support Western's mission, which states that together with our students, staff, and faculty, we are committed to making a positive impact in the state and the world with a shared focus on academic excellence and inclusive achievement. We encourage applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities, veterans, and other candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and with diverse experiences interested in this opportunity.
The Department of Anthropology is actively engaged, in cooperation with our students and community members, in decolonizing our curriculum. We include a wide variety of courses which specifically incorporate accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion (ADEI) topics and active research. As a community of scholars we have an extensive history of collaborative, graduate, and undergraduate papers, posters and publications in national and regional forums directly addressing ADEI issues and research. We have worked, over several decades, to create collaborative ties with local Coastal indigenous communities and create a welcoming and supportive learning environment at the University.
We are a four-fields department committed to the importance of the unique perspectives offered by our diverse field. We value ongoing collaboration across subdisciplines and maintain strong interdisciplinary ties throughout the university. Western Washington University places value on both teaching and research and the department prides itself in the success of our faculty integrating inquiry and pedagogy in our work, which is reflected in the consistently significant number of majors and minors in our program. The successful candidate will join a community committed to both knowledge creation and teaching. The successful candidate will build and maintain a research program involving both undergraduate and graduate students and will collaborate with researchers in and beyond the department and program.

About the Position
The Department of Anthropology maintains a vacancy pool of qualified persons interested in temporary teaching positions. In anticipation of possible openings throughout the academic year and summer sessions, applications are accepted continuously for temporary non-tenure track teaching positions on a part-time basis with occasional opportunities for temporary, full-time appointments. Positions may become available at any time and are typically filled on a quarterly basis.
This position is limited term (non-tenure track) at the rank of Instructor for the duration of the quarter(s) specified. Typically limited-term appointments are for lower division (introductory) courses in the four subfields of anthropology. There is no expectation of continued employment. The Department, the College, and the University value teaching and the candidate is expected to be an exemplary teacher; to be current in the discipline; to engage students actively in their own learning, including discussion, writing, and analysis; and to maintain high standards regarding course content. The candidate is expected to provide students with feedback on their course work and examinations, and to be available to students through regularly scheduled office hours in keeping with department policy. It is required to have the students evaluate the course(s) using the standard University evaluation forms and to make those evaluations available to the department chair and faculty for annual review. The candidate is invited to participate in scholarly and/or creative activity. This is not required for limited-term employment, although it is recognized that it can contribute to the quality of instruction. The candidate is also invited to participate in department activities.
