The goal of Avanti's MBS program is that residents have access to a platform within their immediate living environment that gives them the opportunity to focus on themselves in a positive and empowering way. Psychologically, this provides them an internal locus of control, which promotes self-esteem and confidence. Physically, training the body to be stronger and move more efficiently has practical benefits in the independent completion of tasks of daily living as well as preventing falls.

The role of Fitness Coordinator is one of teacher, facilitator and advocate. The successful candidate will teach fitness classes designed to maintain ageing residents' independence, even reversing some movement incapacity, facilitate group discussions/games to encourage mental acuity and be a support system for individuals at a stage in their lives that can be challenging.

The standard work schedule for the Fitness Coordinator is from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, Sunday through Thursday. Additional on-call, special occasion, or other attendance needs will apply, as requested by Supervisor.

Essential Functions:

• Undergo an initial 18 hours of training to gain the required knowledge of senior fitness program and an exam.
• Teach 20+ classes per week, across two living areas – Assisted Living and Memory Care
• Create the schedule of Strength and Games of the Mind classes for the Avanti community
• Meet with potential residents to discuss the various Strength options available to them
• Conduct one on one orientation meetings with new residents to introduce them to the wellness programs available in the community and provide them with the current schedule of classes
• Assist residents coming to and from class (if necessary)
• Set up and break down of all equipment and materials required for successful implementation of class
• Maintain regular contact with the Home Office MBS representative for continuing education, supplemental trainings and ongoing support
• Other tasks as deemed necessary for successful conduction and maintenance of the M.B.S program
• Rotate in the manager on duty rotation which consists of working weekends
• Perform other duties as requested by the Executive Director.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Strong interpersonal skills – the ability to communicate with others is crucial; not only the residents themselves but also other members of the Avanti team. The successful candidate must show empathy and a desire to exceed others expectations.
• Teaching experience – some experience teaching fitness classes is desired but not necessary. However, a background in teaching (in some capacity) will be beneficial in performing the required duties at the standard expected.
• Organizational skills – this position requires communication across a number of departments, collaboration with contracted staff and some activity scheduling. It is imperative that the successful candidate can organize their time and hold themselves and others accountable to high administrative standards.
• Attend all required meetings and in-services.
• Teamwork- as a team player providing extra support in Taste will be required, as well as, other areas when needed.
• Avanti Core Values- demonstrate and understand. Be observant and aware of any situations or occurrence in the community that may pose a safety hazard to residents or staff. Report such observation immediately to the Executive Director.
• Adhere to company policy for time and attendance.

Requirements:

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Proficient in written and verbal English.
• Demonstration of ability to establish long-term relationships.
• Interest in working with the older adult population.
• Must exhibit and promote a high level of customer service, hospitality, curiosity and friendliness towards all prospects, residents, visitors, employees and the overall community.
• Must have ability to work rotating shifts as needed.
