Night Shift RN – OB / Rural Health (Cross-Trained for ER Coverage)

Overview

Join a rural healthcare setting where your obstetrics expertise makes a direct impact on patients and families—and where your flexibility and clinical confidence are valued. This night shift Registered Nurse role focuses on providing safe, high-quality  rural health obstetric care , with the expectation you can also  support the Emergency Department when there are no OB patients . You’ll use strong assessment skills, sound clinical judgment, and clear communication to deliver patient-centered care across the lifespan, including maternal/newborn and emergent situations.

Required Skills

• Competency in  rural health obstetrics (antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care)
• Ability to  float/support ER coverage when OB census is low
• Strong patient assessment skills (physical and psychosocial) and ability to develop/implement care plans
• Medication administration competence (including IV therapy, blood and blood components per policy)
• Ability to recognize, respond to, and intervene in  life-threatening/emergent situations
• Accurate documentation and effective handoff/shift reporting
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to provide patient/family education and discharge teaching throughout hospitalization
• Proficiency with core nursing skills such as:
  • Vital signs, I&O, glucose monitoring, specimen collection
  • Wound care/dressing changes, catheterization, NG tubes/tube feedings, drains/enemas
  • Airway/suctioning and basic oxygen administration
  • Neurological assessments and fetal monitoring support (as applicable)

Nice to Have Skills

• 1+ year experience as a professional Registered Nurse
• Strong comfort level managing OB conditions such as:
  • Preeclampsia/eclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm labor, PROM
  • Placenta previa, placental abruption
  • Induction/augmentation of labor
  • Scheduled/emergency cesarean sections and perioperative OB care
• Experience with fetal monitoring interpretation (FHR and uterine activity) and testing such as NSTs and challenge/stress testing (per policy)
• Newborn stabilization/resuscitation support experience (e.g., oxygen delivery/PPV, hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia)

Preferred Education and Experience

• Graduate of an accredited  School of Professional Nursing
• Preferred:  One (1) year experience as a professional Registered Nurse

Other Requirements

• License: Registered Nurse currently licensed by the  State of Texas
• Certifications:
  • Current CPR certification
  • ACLS and NRP required within 18 months of employment
• Physical requirements: Extended standing and walking; bending, stooping, twisting, reaching; lifting up to 50 lbs ; occasional heavy lifting when assisting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless
• Commitment to confidentiality, infection control, aseptic technique, safety guidelines, and professional conduct
• Ability to collaborate closely with patients, families, providers, and interdisciplinary teams; participate in committees and perform other duties as assigned
