Maintenance Mechanic

Summary This position is located at the Salisbury VAMC in the Department of Veterans Affairs - Veterans Health Administration - Facility Management in Salisbury, NC. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating and completing maintenance on utility systems and building maintenance while working independently on evening and weekend tours. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience is not specifically quantified; however, applicants must provide evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Experience may include paid, unpaid, volunteer, or National Service work and will be credited accordingly. Candidates will be evaluated against the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards and screened first for the prescribed screen‑out element. Equipment assembly, installation, and repair Interpret instructions and specifications (including blueprint reading) Materials and technical practices Use and maintain tools and equipment Obtain credit for qualifying volunteer experience (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) Applicants should detail their duties, responsibilities, and hours spent in each role. Duties Provide engineering support and respond to all engineering related calls, including mechanical, electrical, and other building and equipment maintenance needs. Operate, perform preventive maintenance, and repair mechanical systems including HVAC, steam, plumbing, sewer, medical air, medical vacuum, and oxygen systems. Perform routine HVAC filter changes according to preventive maintenance schedule. Repair plumbing including piping and fixtures. Serve as initial responder to electrical calls and conduct maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical components and controls on HVAC systems. Reset breakers, perform minor electrical repairs to lights, receptacles, and other electrical equipment. Respond to building maintenance requests involving walls, floors, ceilings, doors, and other areas; perform emergency repairs as necessary; refer major repairs to the Building Maintenance Shop. Operate and maintain commercial HVAC systems and associated components (chillers, air handling units, fan coil units, VAVs, pumps, valves, piping, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, controls, etc.) in all areas of the medical center, including operating rooms, ICU, labs, computer rooms, and other critical areas. Troubleshoot and repair all HVAC components, including pneumatic and electronic DDC controls. Operate and maintain chilled water and steam components for each HVAC system. Select appropriate filters for HVAC systems. Work full time Monday‑Friday 7:00 am‑3:30 pm; may be required to adjust tour or cover extended vacancies during second or third shift. Physical Requirements Work from ladders, scaffolding, and hydraulic platforms; often in confined, cramped, dirty, and hard‑to‑reach locations. Involves prolonged crouching, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. Lifting or carrying tools, equipment, ladders, and parts and supplies up to 50 pounds; occasionally over 50 pounds. Exposed to temperature extremes, drafts, dampness, water, noise, and hazardous conditions typical of the trade. Work may require overtime and operation of a motor vehicle. Working Conditions Majority of work occurs in industrial environment; some work outdoors and exposed to elements. Frequent encounter with ladders, catwalks, and confined spaces. #J-18808-Ljbffr
