Core Responsibilities

The Substation Utility Field Worker supports safe, reliable electric service by keeping substation sites and related work areas maintained and operational. This entry-level, onsite role is hands-on and safety focused.

Key responsibilities include:
- Perform substation site maintenance (grass cutting, site leveling, spreading limestone) and operate a tractor
- Operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle and assist Right-of-Way with bush hog work and herbicide application
- Complete required upkeep on heavy equipment used in the role
- Repair consumers’ property when SLEMCO operations have caused damage
- Follow Cooperative, OSHA, state, and other applicable safety and regulatory requirements

Required qualifications/skills:
- Ability to operate hand tools (shovels, rakes, chainsaws, weedeaters)
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to use and keep lawn equipment and an ATV in good condition
- Louisiana driver’s license required; CDL may be required

A Typical Day

Your day starts by reviewing the work plan, required PPE, and site-specific safety checks before heading out to assigned substations. In the field, you rotate between outdoor tasks and equipment support—adjusting to weather conditions, site access needs, and changing priorities. You may coordinate briefly with Right-of-Way or other crews to align schedules and confirm safe work boundaries. Throughout the day, you document completed work, note any site concerns for follow-up, and keep tools and equipment organized for the next assignment. The shift ends with a final check-in to confirm the day’s work is closed out correctly and that the next day’s needs are understood.
