Job Opportunities Opportunity to serve the community as a Park Ranger, enforcing animal control and civil ordinances in the Town and beach area. Major Duties and Responsibilities A. Patrols the Town for stray animals; answers calls; investigates complaints and picks up stray animals; traps; takes apprehended animals to the shelter; enforces animal ordinances. B. Patrols beach area and issues appropriate warning and citations; issues citations and tickets for violations of animal control ordinances and for ordinances in areas such as littering, illegal surfing, open containers, open beach fires, illegal diving or fishing from bridges or piers; answers questions and explains procedures for compliance. C. Investigate cases of cruelty to animals and recommend appropriate action; takes wounded animals to veterinarians for care; testifies in court, when necessary, on a variety of cases and complaints. D. Educate children and adults by giving classes on animals. E. Takes care of animals at the shelter; attempts to encourage adoption; euthanizes animals at the shelter when needed; cleans the shelter and assists the public in reclaiming animals. F. Oversee the ordering of supplies for the Park Ranger staff. G. Operates a 4‑wheel drive vehicle that is operable for beach patrol; animal handling equipment; sets traps and cages to collect wild and vicious animals. H. Assists animal owners with wounded animals; disposes of dead animals. I. Maintains completed records on activities; keeps logs on daily activities and calls. J. Answers questions from the public concerning a variety of information about the Town. K. Maintain operational readiness and stay updated with Town Ordinances and State laws. L. Assists Town departments with activities as needed, including in weather emergencies and special events. M. Supervisory duties to Park Ranger I. Duties include scheduling, performance evaluations, assigning tasks, and overseeing on‑call operations. Training new Rangers and ensuring ongoing skills are at required expectations. N. Public facing role that includes acting as a liaison with outside organizations and the public. O. Performs related duties as required. Controls This position is under the Police Department. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Police Chief. This position is non‑exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Physical Requirements or Special Working Conditions A. Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. B. Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. C. Must possess the visual acuity to operate a vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing breeds and colors of animals. D. The employee is subject to hazards in public safety work including working in inside and outside environments, extreme temperatures, and the risks involved in handling rabid or vicious animals as well as, and exposure to various hazards such as various atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, and physical conditions. The employee is periodically on call to answer after‑hour calls. Employees are also exposed to bloodborne pathogens, are subject to the OSHA rules and regulations, considered in a safety‑sensitive position, and may be required to work in close quarters. Qualifications and Experience A. Experience involving contact with the public. B. 5+ years of experience as a Park Ranger; involving the handling or caring for animals as well as in the enforcement of laws and ordinances; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. C. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. D. Ability to effectively supervise and oversee all Park Ranger duties in the town. E. This is a non‑sworn position. Educations and Certifications A. Graduation from high school or equivalent. B. Valid NC Drive License. C. Training in animal cruelty cases, to allow testimony in court. D. Training in Park Ranger program or equivalent experience.
