City Of Oxnard's Public Works Department Seeks A Custodian

The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department is seeking a custodian who is highly motivated, takes initiative, and has excellent oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will have previous custodial experience, the ability to work independently, and, as a team member, have a positive attitude, excellent customer service, and interpersonal skills.

What You'll Do:

• Sweep, vacuum, mop, strip, seal, wax, and buff floors.
• Operate a variety of cleaning equipment (e.g., carpet extractors, slow and high-speed buffers).
• Clean, scrub and disinfect restrooms, showers and related areas, including toilets, urinals, sinks and other bathroom fixtures.
• Maintain security of buildings by locking/unlocking doors, windows, gates, and setting alarms; raise/lower the flag as assigned.
• Polish and clean furniture, wash walls and windows, clean stairwells, elevators, breakrooms, conference rooms, empty trash and recycling, and dust.
• Demonstrate a full understanding of policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties.
• Maintain logs, supply lists, and report any maintenance issues in a timely manner.
• Routine coverage of city buildings when needed.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker in that it provides semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance work.

Supervision Exercised / Supervision Received:

Receives close supervision and specific direction regarding assignments and deadlines.

Work Schedule:

The work week for this recruitment is generally Monday through Friday 4:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Depending on the work assignment, staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours. In addition, this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs.

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.

Position-Specific Responsibilities Might Include:

• Emptying trash and recycling containers;
• Cleaning and sanitation of restrooms;
• Polishing and maintenance of fixtures and furniture;
• Stripping/waxing floors;
• Shampooing carpet;
• Attending to unplanned spills and clean-up tasks;
• Opening and securing buildings;
• Setting up and taking down flags;
• Maintaining logs and reporting maintenance issues.

Education:

High School Diploma or GED

Experience:

Two (2) years of custodial experience.

License/Certification:

Depending on assignment, some positions may require: Valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

Other Requirements:

Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.

The eligibility list established from this recruitment is to fill this position only. There is currently one (1) full-time vacancy for the night shift within the Public Works Department.

Selected candidate(s) must pass a thorough reference check and background investigation. Some positions that work with or have access to the Police Department may require a polygraph exam. Select positions may require candidates to undergo a pre-employment medical and/or psychological evaluation.

Positions in this classification are represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).

For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools. Candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with ongoing work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position requires a 12-month probationary period.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
