Medical Receptionist / Registration Specialist

Location: Hospital & Outpatient Settings

Schedule: Rotating 12-hour shifts (Emergency Department) OR 8am - 5pm (Outpatient), up to 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays as needed

About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate and customer-focused Patient Access Representative to serve as the first point of contact for patients across emergency, outpatient, and inpatient settings. This role is responsible for delivering an exceptional patient experience while accurately collecting demographic, insurance, and registration information to support quality patient care.

The ideal candidate is empathetic, highly organized, comfortable with technology, and passionate about helping others in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Registration & Check-In

• Welcome patients and visitors with a professional, friendly, and compassionate attitude.
• Register patients accurately within the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
• Verify and update demographic, insurance, and contact information.
• Obtain and process required consent forms and supporting documentation.
• Ensure patient records are complete and accurate.

Emergency Department Support

• Register patients arriving through the main entrance, ambulance bay, or helicopter transport.
• Perform bedside registration using portable technology when required.
• Verify insurance coverage and collect necessary documentation during emergency visits.
• Assist uninsured patients with self-pay processes and required paperwork.

Outpatient & Clinic Support

• Efficiently check patients in and out of appointments.
• Schedule follow-up appointments and assist with charge entry.
• Answer questions related to services such as laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy.
• Provide excellent customer service throughout the patient visit.

Inpatient & Hospital Admitting

• Support registrations for inpatient admissions, surgeries, radiology, laboratory services, and other hospital departments.
• Complete bedside registration and documentation when necessary.
• Ensure accurate insurance verification and patient information updates.

Customer Service

• Address patient questions and concerns with empathy and professionalism.
• Collaborate with providers, nurses, and clinical staff to support a positive patient experience.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with all healthcare regulations and policies.

QualificationsRequired

• Minimum of 2 years of work experience.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Compassionate, empathetic, and patient-focused approach.
• Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong computer and technology skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred

• Experience in healthcare registration, patient access, medical reception, scheduling, or customer service.
• Experience working with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
• Insurance verification or healthcare administrative experience.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $16.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
