Associate Director, Sports Performance Coach Job Summary: The University of Portland is a National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I institution and West Coast Conference (WCC) member located in Portland, Oregon. The Associate Director of Sports Performance Coach supports the Assistant Athletics Director of Sports Performance in the development of high-performance student athletes by providing varsity teams and athletes with year‑round coaching and educational programs related to strength, speed, and conditioning. Core Duties Serve as deputy director of sports performance, providing support in administration of sports performance and building relations with all head coaches and student‑athletes beyond specifically assigned teams. Enhance potential sports performance and decrease potential injury of student-athletes by developing and implementing educational programs regarding: Strength, speed and conditioning programs. Nutrition and supplementation programs. Regeneration programs. Serve as staff contact for specified areas, such as continuing education, technology, food/nutrition and/or gear/apparel. Conduct individual and group instruction in strength, speed, and conditioning training activities. Coordinate, implement, and evaluate student‑athlete performance testing as part of development of specific educational programs. Consult and assist University sports medicine staff regarding athletic injury prevention, rehabilitation, and nutrition/supplement education. Maintain a safe, positive, and orderly environment during all performance training activities. Maintain regular communication with coaches, sports medicine staff, and athletic administration in support of teams and individual student-athletes. Other instructional duties and responsibilities as assigned by Assistant Athletics Director of Sports Performance. Assist in the hiring, training, and management of student interns based on Sports Performance Department and University policies, procedures, operations and training philosophy. May be required to drive student athletes and/or other University personnel to practices, games, or other functions. Other duties as relevant to the duties of the position or as assigned by supervisor or designee. Education & Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or related field. Required: Two years of directly related club or collegiate Division I experience. Preferred: Master’s degree in exercise science or related field. Or equivalent education and/or experience. Certifications & Licenses Required: Valid Drivers License. Required: First Aid/CPR Certified or ability to obtain certification. Required: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Strength Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Instructional knowledge in sport performance, including strength and conditioning principles. Ability to develop educational programs related to sport performance. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to lead, motivate and develop student-athletes and foster a cooperative work environment. Strong orientation towards continued learning and applying learning in the work setting. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail. Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly to diverse audiences. Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, mentor, and develop staff and student-athletes while fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. Commitment to continuous professional development and the application of emerging best practices in sport science and performance. Professional judgment and demeanor, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across a broad range of stakeholders, including students, families, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and the public. Ability to navigate and operate effectively within a complex university environment, including adherence to institutional policies, procedures, and compliance standards. Knowledge of injury prevention and basic response protocols, including the ability to provide assistance to injured student-athletes in coordination with sports medicine staff. Professional demeanor and ability to establish effective working relationships, professional rapport, and effectively accomplish work within a University setting that includes a wide array of individuals, groups, policies, and processes. Ability to work effectively with various constituencies including students, the general public, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and other members of the UP community. Competence with and commitment to inclusive excellence; ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn NCAA (or other sport governing body) rules and regulations applicable to athletic fields and grounds. Ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at the level of sophistication required for the duties of this position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office and the internet. All University of Portland positions require the ability to quickly learn and use new technologies, software, and applications in depth and at level of proficiency required for duties of the position. In most situations, the necessity of learning, using, and supporting new technologies, software, and/or applications does not change a job description nor make the position one that involves higher level duties. Physical Requirements This position requires the physical ability to demonstrate strength, speed, and conditioning activities, techniques, and skills. Frequently: stand, walk, bend, twist, use fingers and hands to handle materials and tools or equipment, and reach with hands and/or arms. Frequently: lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. Frequently: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus. Frequently: ability to work flexible and irregular hours, including mornings, nights, holidays, and weekends as necessary, as well as attendance at home and away events. Travel: ability to travel, mostly by car; ability to drive. Working Conditions Hours of employment: the position requires working flexible and irregular hours, including mornings, nights, holidays, and weekends as necessary, as well as attendance at home and away events. Work related stress: stress from work related situations such as those involving competitive, challenging, urgent, or time sensitive matters. Travel: travel to local and domestic away competitions, and other events and activities will be required.
