Physician Assistant

Description The Per Diem Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant assists, monitors, and manages the day‑to‑day needs of patients under the supervision of a physician, performing duties consistent with PA standards. Minimum 1–2 years experience in cardiac surgery is required. Weekend, night, and holiday coverage as needed. Responsibilities Provide medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician, consistent with the PA's education, training, and experience. Perform and document accurate, complete, and relevant history and physical assessments appropriate for the patient’s age, gender, and clinical problem. Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic studies/procedures in collaboration with physicians and consultants as appropriate. Manage general medical and surgical conditions based on comprehensive knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and indications/contraindications of pharmacologic agents and other treatment modalities. Prescribe medication safely and effectively in accordance with best practices, hospital policy, and New Jersey regulations, providing patient education as needed. Seek opportunities to promote Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) PA practice recognition through conferences, publications, and presentations. Provide patient‑ and family‑centered, compassionate care to promote health and treat disease. Practice as a healthcare provider according to rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws as outlined in privileges delineation. Apply evidence‑based and value‑based medicine to systematically analyze and improve patient care practices and outcomes. Evaluate patient/family transition of care planning, considering resource utilization, cost, quality, safety, and self‑management promotion for chronic conditions. Demonstrate clinical expertise through advanced assessment and procedural skills pertinent to the specialty. Translate best practice into clinical practice by evaluating current protocols and standards of care. Provide culturally sensitive and education‑appropriate health‑management education to patients and families. Facilitate consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all healthcare team members through participation in daily interdisciplinary rounds. Serve as an advocate for patients and families, identifying and addressing obstacles to care progression and escalating issues as appropriate. Serve as a clinical resource for the multidisciplinary team by addressing clinical, process, and system improvement opportunities. Participate in organizational and departmental meetings, committees, and workgroups as necessary. Demonstrate the highest level of accountability for professional practice and adhere to ethical principles regarding patient confidentiality, informed consent, and adverse outcomes. Promote a collaborative work environment supporting the organizational mission, behavior expectations, values, and pillars. Mentor other PAs and precept students in PA programs and participate in educational programs as a clinical expert. Identify patient/family educational needs and collaborate to implement appropriate teaching materials. Promote innovation by integrating new clinical knowledge into practice. Participate in clinical research activities and disseminate findings through practice, education, presentations, and publications. Identify ethical care issues and coordinate interdisciplinary meetings to resolve them. Comply with HMH and department‑specific scope of services, policies and procedures as applicable. Adhere to all HMH infection control and safety policies. Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adhere to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Qualifications Successfully completed an approved physician's assistant program accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace. Valid Physician Assistant License. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Basic Life Support (BLS) AHA certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) AHA certification. Compensation & Benefits Starting rate: minimum $80.96 per hour. Compensation may vary based on experience, education, location, and other market factors. Eligible for performance‑based incentives, bonuses, commissions, and shift differentials for evening, night, or weekend work.
