Nurse Practitioner II, Trauma (Day Shift)

Overview Founded in 1965, the University of California, Irvine (UCI) is a leading public university located in Orange County. Responsibilities The position of Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the various divisions of the department of surgery, including Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service. Duties include – and are not limited to – assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all patients on the general surgery services as well as patients in the surgical intensive care unit. The nurse practitioner will participate in inpatient sign out at the beginning and end of shift, follow up with the General Surgery teams / residents / attending physicians, and will be involved in trauma resuscitations and performing surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients. The NP is responsible for the care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc.) and follow‑up, obtaining consults as needed, and discharging patients (including discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. The NP also triages phone calls, reviews critical labs, follows up on results with patient and medical staff, obtains comprehensive medical histories, performs initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and explores patients’ interpretation of health needs. Incumbent will identify and treat patients and manage treatment of hospitalized patients. The NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation. Under the joint supervision of the Chief of Trauma, Burns, and Critical Care Services, and the Trauma Medical Director and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. The NP is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide advanced nursing care in their area of specialization. Qualifications Required: Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System. Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers. Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job. Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload. Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.li> Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures. Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information. Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license. Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license. Current, active, unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration. Active National Provider Identifier (NPI). NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018) – Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification. Within six months of hire, ATLS certification. One or more years of experience to support setting and patient population. Preferred: Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, Power point and Outlook). Familiarity with UC policies and procedures. Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese. Experience in Trauma/Critical Care.
