Position Vice President, Operations, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) Location: Hackensack, New Jersey Reporting to: Lisa Tank, MD, President and Chief Hospital Executive, Hackensack University Medical Center Purpose of the Position The Vice President, Operations will serve as a key member of the executive team and be accountable for developing and executing the strategic plan of the Medical Center, overseeing programmatic growth, development and performance across all operational departments, and ensuring excellence in patient care, staff development, and financial performance. Key Responsibilities Direct and participate in the development and implementation of the Medical Center’s strategic plan, performance improvement program, HR program, and annual operating budget. Interpret, communicate, and assure implementation of the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Plan and direct organizational programs and facilities in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. Establish and enforce standards for safety, quality, and reliability across all areas of responsibility. Develop and direct new programs, operations, and services; collaborate closely with nursing functions to ensure continuity of programming and services. Coordinate annual operating and capital budgeting for areas of responsibility. Recruit, hire, supervise competent leadership and manage personnel issues, grievances, and personnel decisions. Act as a role model for leaders, drive business growth, identify market trends, and develop business models, policies, and procedures. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other care team members to ensure excellence in patient care and foster a positive environment. Establish effective relationships with key stakeholders, including community physicians, team members, and board members. Ensure department activities meet established care standards and deliver high‑quality, safe, and patient‑centered care. Champion continuous quality improvement, using data‑driven decision making and high reliability thinking. Facilitate integrated collaboration across clinical departments, service lines, business lines, and independent physicians. Monitor financial indicators, adjust strategies, and manage capital and human resources to achieve fiscal efficiency. Oversee vendor contracts and third‑party relationships as assigned. Mentor leaders on scheduling, conflicts, and leadership skill development. Allocate expense resources, build a cohesive leadership team, and promote teamwork and professional growth. Perform other duties and projects as assigned. Adhere to HMH organizational competencies and behavior standards. Operational Scope The Vice President oversees 1,600 FTEs across the following departments: Pharmacy Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech, Pulmonary Neuroscience Organ Transplant Trauma Operations (including Pathology Laboratory) Children’s Hospital Candidate Experience and Professional Qualifications Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital operations within an integrated delivery system. Excellent financial management, delegation, and organizational skills. Strong strategic planning and business modelling skills. Experience leading large, complex hospitals with a highly matrixed structure. Exceptional interpersonal skills, fairness, and accountability. Track record of improving key healthcare metrics such as patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, physician engagement, and quality. Proven ability to develop coaching strategies and inspire teams. Analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills. Effective communication, both oral and written, and ability to remain calm in emergencies. Collaboration with diverse populations and ability to reach consensus.
