This role assists the Shelter Manager with the overall supervision of the animal care team ensuring excellent animal care. This position assists with animal transport, manages the cleanliness and orderliness of all animal areas and workspaces, and assists with ordering supplies with the goal of maximizing the use of our space and increasing our processing efficiency. The Animal Care Supervisor shares responsibility for the recruitment, scheduling, training, development, and coaching of Oakland Shelter staff. Reports to: Oakland Shelter ManagerBenefits : 100% employer paid medical, dental, and life insurance, 15 days starting PTO, 10 paid holidays, 401(k) with 3% employer contribution, discounted veterinary care benefits, AD&D, STD, and LTD.QualificationsResponsibilitiesMaintain and improve the standards of shelter animal careDevelop and implement efficiency measures to streamline animal care processesWork with the Volunteer Services Manager and the Oakland Shelter Manager to develop creative strategies to make animal care volunteering a rewarding experience, thus increasing our volunteer retentionCollaborate with behavior and veterinary staff to ensure proper behavioral and medical care of shelter animals is delivered in an efficient and timely mannerIn cooperation with shelter management team, evaluate animals for adoptions or euthanasia, perform euthanasia as needed, and ensure timely and accurate maintenance of the euthanasia recordsImplement, monitor, and enforce protocols for cleaning and safetyCoordinate the transfer and intake of cats and dogs into our organization as well as between the Oakland and Dublin facilitiesIn absence of medical support staff coordinate, delegate, or perform medical support staff tasksAct as a liaison with staff at East Bay SPCA's municipal contractsPerform animal care and client care duties as neededInteract with clients appropriately and efficiently while fostering empathy and delivering exceptional client serviceParticipate in and support special events and fundraisers as neededCollaborate heavily with Client Care Supervisor, Animal Pathway Supervisor and Oakland Shelter Manager to provide shelter-wide supervision and program developmentStaff ManagementFoster teamwork, creativity, and innovation to meet East Bay SPCA goalsExemplify forward thinking and collaboration for animal and client care staffCreate and monitor staff work schedules including daily management of staff work assignments and being accountable for staff decisions and actionsCommunicate pertinent information to all shelter staff in a timely and effective mannerMeet regularly with managers and line staff to ensure that goals for animal and client care are being metEnsure adherence by shelter staff to East Bay SPCA policies and proceduresParticipate and contribute constructively to staff meetingsReview and approve staff timecards and paid time off requestsResponsible for coaching staff by providing regular ongoing feedback as well as conducting 90-day and annual staff reviews; assists with hiring, onboarding, discipline, and termination when neededOversee and coach the Animal Care Associates, ensuring proper training of all new animal care employees and volunteersCollaborate heavily with Client Care Supervisor, Animal Pathway Supervisor and Oakland Shelter Manager to provide supportive leadership to animal care, animal pathway, and client care teams, especially when specific team supervisors are out of officeAdministrativeComplete administrative tasks such as email, phone messages and reports in a timely, accurate and appropriate mannerMaintain the shelter facility and report necessary repairs and improvements to the Shelter Manager, Facilities Manager, and Vice President of OperationsAssist with ensuring OSHA complianceReport and document accidents in a timely manner, ensure that incident reports, animal bite reports, and worker compensation claims are filed properly in accordance with established procedures and policiesShares in opening and closing responsibilities at Oakland shelter facility on a regular, and as needed, basis, including acting as the on-duty leadership member on assigned holidaysEnsure that animal records are current and accurateMaintain shelter inventory and submit requisitions in a timely fashionMay be required to perform all duties at the Dublin shelter facility as neededQualificationsExcellent team leadership abilities; typically demonstrated by at least one year in a lead or supervisory role, preferably in an animal welfare settingExperience working in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic strongly preferredProven organizational skills and effective written and verbal communicationAbility to think critically, multi-task, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, environment with a positive attitudeConfident and competent animal handler with dogs and cats of all sizes, conditions, and temperaments. Must be able to leash, walk, and maintain control over large and extra-large dogs, which can include dogs 90 pounds and overAbility to obtain Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit and California Certified Euthanasia Technician within six months of employmentProficient in Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Shelter Buddy shelter software program is an advantagePre-employment background check and drug screening required; we do not screen for marijuana useReliable transportation, a valid CA driver's license and proof of insurability required. Travel with both personal and company vehicles is required.High school graduate or equivalent; college courses and/or graduate in relevant field preferredWorking ConditionsWork is primarily performed in an animal shelter environment with exposure to detergents, cleaning products, wet and humid environments, and seasonal outdoor conditionsWeekend work required; must be available to work evenings and holidays as neededAnimal contacts and related injuries, including bites and scratches may occur.
