Lecturer

University of Kansas

The Department of French & Italian at the University of Kansas seeks individuals qualified to teach part-time to full-time undergraduate and graduate courses in French language and/or Francophone literatures and cultures. This position is primarily for teaching in-person courses at the Lawrence campus of the University of Kansas. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty whose primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. Employment contracts will be committed on an academic year basis for one-year appointments. Normally, lecturers can expect to teach in the fall and spring (and summer for graduate courses) semester with a load of one to four courses. Lecturers may be reappointed for subsequent years contingent upon need, budget and teaching performance. This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement between The University of Kansas and United Academics, United Academics of KU, AFT-AAUP, AFL-CIO; UAKU is the exclusive bargaining representative. As the State of Kansas is a right to work state, you have the right to be a member or not be a member of a union without fear of personal or professional repercussions. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start date of the position. Job Description 100% Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour courses at the 100-, 200-, 300-, 400-, or 600-level. Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled. For asynchronous online courses with no class meetings, engage and interact with students via posted videos on course content, video-chat sessions, more frequent email updates, etc. Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades. Conduct assessments of student learning and comply with department requests for course data on assessment practices and learning outcomes. Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours. Adhere to departmental, college and university policies. Required Qualifications For those hired to teach at the undergraduate level: M.A. in French or related arts or humanities discipline. Near native or native command of French. Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation; For those hired to teach at the graduate level: PhD or ABD in French literature or linguistics. Strong interest and demonstrated excellence in teaching, as evidenced by letter of application, letters of recommendation, statement of teaching philosophy, and course evaluations when available. Near-native or native command of French. For those hired to teach foreign language acquisition only: Bachelor of Arts degree in any discipline with at least ten years of French language proficiency. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest. Experience teaching in hybrid or online formats. Training in second language acquisition and/or language pedagogy. Ability to offer courses in French for the professons at undergraduate level.
