Summary

The purpose of this position is to help plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate community-based nutrition care, education, and promotion of services.

Duties

Help

  • Provide consultation and technical assistance to the Clinical Diabetes Program, Health Promotion Department, and other professional staff to help coordinate service unit wellness programs and other diabetes prevention programs.
  • Help review and assess program progress and operations to identify and make recommendations for improving the quality and assess the appropriateness of community nutrition services and programs.
  • Conduct nutritional assessment of clients, developing nutritional care plans with them and their families, consistent with cultural, social, and physiological requirements.
  • Record information in medical records (progress notes) regarding nutritional requirements, patient progress, education, follow-up, etc.
  • Report and summarize progress and activities at regular intervals and prepare periodic and special reports or projects.

Background Investigation Requirement:

This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.

A background investigation is a standard process used by the Federal Government to verify an individual's identity, employment history, education, and other relevant information to determine suitability for Federal service.

Upon receipt of instructions, applicants must complete all required background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Timely completion is critical to avoid delays in processing or a determination of unsuitability.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels:
  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.
  • Completion a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.
  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
NOTE : Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR), you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

GS-09 : Two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree or one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level.

Examples of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level
  • Prepare reports or projects pertaining to nutrition.
  • Apply established nutrition methods to provide nutrition assessments, counseling, and education to individuals, families, and groups.
  • Assist with planning and carrying out nutrition activities.
GS-11 : Three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level.

Examples of specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level
  • Review, evaluate and arrange to acquire suitable educational materials on basic and specialized nutrition topics.
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance to help coordinate wellness programs and other diabetes prevention programs.
  • Review and assess program progress and operations to identify and make recommendations for improving the quality and assess the appropriateness of community nutrition services and programs.

NOTE : Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Time In Grade

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
