RSU5 DURHAM-FREEPORT-POWNAL Food Service Assistant (215) 2026-2027 Freeport High School RSU5 seeks a candidate to provide general kitchen assistance in a school cafeteria. Responsibilities include food preparation, cooking, meal service, and dishwashing. The Food Service Assistant plays a key role in ensuring meals are prepared and served safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all health and nutrition standards.
Key Responsibilities: Assist with food preparation, including washing, cutting, and assembling ingredients.
Support cooking and meal production as directed.
Serve meals to students and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system and handle transactions accurately.
Perform dishwashing and maintain clean, sanitary kitchen and dining areas.
Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures.
Stock and replenish food items, supplies, and condiments as needed.
Assist with receiving and properly storing deliveries.
Support the set up and breakdown of serving lines and special events.
Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth daily operations.
Follow all school district policies and USDA school nutrition guidelines.
Qualifications: High school diploma equivalent.
Prior experience in a commercial kitchen is preferred.
ServSafe certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication and team work skills.
Ability to interact positively with students and staff.
Reports to: Nutrition Director/Kitchen Manager
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week 187 days per year (school-year position)
Requirements: Must hold valid CHRC Certification from the ME Dept. of Education.
Position remains open until suitable candidate is found.
