Accountant IIThe Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as an Accountant on our finance team. This person supports the daily functioning of the organization through accurate financial processing, reporting and filing, payroll support, and strong internal controls.MARC, the association of local governments and metropolitan planning organization for the bistate Kansas City region, promotes and supports cooperation on regional issues, including transportation, the environment, our workforce and economy, aging services, community development, quality early learning, public safety communications and emergency services. These positions work as part of a team of highly competent financial professionals that play an integral role in supporting this important work.About This PositionThis accounting role is a good fit for someone who takes pride in accurate, reliable financial processing and understands how strong fiscal practices support public trust. The Accountant II will perform intermediate-level accounting work across core financial processes, contribute to required reporting and filing, complete payroll-related processes, and help ensure internal controls are adequately and consistently designed, planned and followed. This person will also build positive working relationships and communicate with patience, clarity and professionalism.Core ResponsibilitiesAccounting Operations - Performs financial processes including managing all accounts payable, accounts receivable and cash receipts. May also support on fringe benefits, investments, insurance, revenue recognition, bank reconciliations, and fixed assets. This role focuses on intermediate-level accounting processes and tasks, with particular attention to accuracy, documentation and timely follow-through.Payroll Support - Completes biweekly payroll, benefits processes, benefit updates and salary changes, including awareness of internal policies and governing regulations such as FLSA and tax issues. Supports accurate, timely payroll-related processing and documentation.Manage Vendor Accounting - Supports vendor-related accounting activity, including financial processing, documentation, requisitions, revenue recognition, budget changes, financial reports, vendor setup and payment-related processes. Works closely with finance teammates, program/budget staff, directors and agency partners to ensure accurate and timely payments.Internal Controls - Designs and plans internal controls to be adequate and consistent, follows organization-wide and department financial policies and procedures, and helps identify practical improvements that support accuracy, compliance and continuity.Contribute to Special Projects and Continuous Improvement - Participates in special projects related to financial issues and continuous improvement initiatives of the organization, including process improvements that support efficient financial operations.Reporting & Filing - Contributes to the preparation of the annual comprehensive financial report (ACFR) and applicable tax filings, including completion of year-end accounting and financial records, adjusting journal entries, audit reconciliations, schedules and other supporting documentation.Benefits of the job:Estimate starting salary 60-67kFlexible work schedule, working 3 days per week in person and up to 2 days per week from homeFull benefits, including health, vision, dental, multiple retirement options, and a benefit allowanceJoin a warm, collaborative, mission-focused teamAbout YouBachelor's degree in finance, accounting or a related field preferred; equivalent education and relevant experience may be considered.Minimum of one to three years of experience with intermediate-level accounting and payroll related technology applications required, particularly with payroll processing, accounts payable, reconciliations or similar financial processing work.Experience in nonprofit or government work preferred.Experience with grants, financial reporting, audits, tax filings, 1099s or vendor-related processing preferred.Your SkillsPossess knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), specifically statements issued by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).Ability to conduct research, accurately prepare reports, analyze and present information.Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.Ability to make sound decisions by applying policies and procedures and using available resources.Proficiency with Word, Excel, Teams, Office 365 and the ability to learn and use various financial management, budget and accounting software platforms.Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and provide excellent service to internal and external customers.Ability to pass a background check.MARC provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job, and we understand that candidate may come from a less traditional background.
