L&D Registered Nurse (RN)

About the Position

This position involves working in a Level II Trauma Center and a Level IV NICU, focusing on high-acuity labor and delivery cases. The role includes responsibilities in both active and non-active labor management, as well as antepartum care.

General Information

• L&D Beds: 34 (15 labor rooms, 12 antepartum, 4 OB ED, 3 OR)
• Postpartum Beds: 18
• Patient Deliveries: Up to 300 per month
• Patient Ratios:
  • 1:1 for active labor
  • 1:2 for non-active labor
  • 1:2-3 for antepartum (varies by acuity)

Patient Types

• High Acuity Cases:
  • Hypertension
  • Magnesium administration
  • C-sections (33% rate)
  • Preterm labor
  • Insulin drips (rarely)
  • Vaginal deliveries
  • Epidurals and inductions
  • Robust antepartum care
  • Multiple births and postpartum hemorrhage

Required Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum of 2 years in Labor & Delivery with previous travel experience preferred; 1 year experience may be considered upon review for first-time travelers.
• Certifications:
  • BLS
  • NRP
  • Intermediate FHM (AWHONN)

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

• Labor management and delivery of high-risk OB patients
• Triage of OB patients and circulation in the OR
• Ability to perform cervical checks and interpret fetal monitoring strips
• Assistance in receiving and recovering normal newborns as needed
• Familiarity with EPIC EMR system

Support on the Unit

• CNA support for transport and room clean-up
• Scrub Techs: NRP certified LPNs
• Charge Nurse: Free floating
• Phlebotomy services available
• Resource RN and scheduled Break Nurses
• 24/7 Respiratory Therapy for high-risk deliveries
• 24/7 Anesthesia coverage

Orientation and Scheduling

• Orientation includes hospital and unit-specific training:
  • Preceptor program includes 2 weeks on the unit and 1 week independently.
  • For ANM, 6 shifts of unit orientation paired with a Charge Nurse.
• Weekend rotation every other weekend, with variable scheduling based on needs.
• Shift times are 0700-1930 and 1900-0730; ANM shifts from 1900-0700.

• Scrub colors are provided and should not be worn outside the facility.
