Immunology MLS - Day Shift Scientist Trainee

Job Description Who We’re Looking For UW Medicine – Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Trainee/1 to work in the Immunology Laboratory at the Renton Central Laboratory. The Immunology Lab provides a wide range of specialty assays including autoantibody testing, electrophoresis, IFA, allergy, ELISA, CSF transferrin testing, and the world’s only Anti‑Merkel Cell Panel. You will work closely with the Dr. Nghiem Lab and other specialty clinics. Work Schedule

100% FTE

Monday – Friday Day shift Responsibilities Perform clinical laboratory tests used in screening, diagnosing, and treating pathological conditions, including: Laboratory testing on patient, research, and proficiency samples, accurately and precisely. Use automated immunoanalyzers (Binding Site Optilite, BioRad BioPlex, Phadia250), automated IFA/ELISA processors (BioRad PhD), electrophoresis apparatus (Sebia Phoresis, Assist, Hydrasys), immunofluorescent microscopes (Nikon, Zeiss), Magpix Luminex, Euroimmun Immunblot. Perform manual assays (ELISA, radial immunodiffusion, line blot, cold agglutinin titers, viscosity measurements, cryoglobulins, cryofibrinogens). Subjective immunofluorescence microscopy (ANA, ANCA, other cytoplasmic antibodies). Use instrument‑linked computers, Sunquest LIS, Lab Medicine server systems, UW Medicine systems (Epic), Microsoft Office, MyChem, MediaLab. Maintain Immunology instruments per SOPs (daily, weekly, monthly). Run and interpret quality controls; take corrective action when QC fails. Troubleshoot instrument issues and coordinate with technical support. Work independently, manage workload, and seek assistance when needed. Assist and train new employees, medical students, residents, and MLS students. Participate in quality improvement projects, method validation studies, staff meetings, Windows Teams communication review, and competency assessments. Maintain a safe laboratory environment and comply with all SOPs and safety protocols. Perform additional duties as assigned. MLS Trainee Requirements Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education/experience. Eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist or categorical certification exam from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within 18 months of hire; failure to obtain certification within 18 months may lead to termination. MLS 1 Requirements Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education/experience. Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with ASCP or equivalent certifying organization, or specialty certification appropriate to the laboratory division. One year of experience as an MLS Trainee; one year of externship experience may count. Desired Qualifications Experience with immunology assays and instruments. Excellent communication skills.
