Quality Control Manager

Position Quality Control Manager Job Overview Leads the QC laboratory team to execute quality operations strategies that drive strong performance, reliable delivery, and continuous improvement. Oversees laboratory performance indicators and ensures sampling, testing, and evaluation of raw materials, bulk products, in-process materials, and finished goods meet approved specifications and SOPs. Key Responsibilities Manage performance and development of laboratory staff across multiple labs; provide leadership to chemistry and microbiology QC lab supervisors. Ensure laboratory areas are fully resourced and staff are properly trained to perform duties efficiently and safely. Recruit, hire, assign, direct, develop, and evaluate staff to meet project milestones and function-specific activities. Monitor and evaluate staff performance, providing coaching and development opportunities. Lead chemistry and microbiology QC teams in sampling, testing, and associated activities supporting manufacturing and supply chain operations. Set strategy, direction, and goals for the team in alignment with divisional leadership and corporate objectives. Lead quality management, process deployment, and continuous improvement projects and initiatives. Oversee and prioritize laboratory activities for chemical, physical, and microbiological testing of incoming and finished products. Act as process owner for key quality processes, ensuring excellence and continuous improvement. Ensure investigation processes follow root cause analysis and corrective action for non-conformances or SOP deviations. Monitor laboratory spending against budget and recommend capital expenditures. Develop, review, revise, and approve SOPs, test methods, specifications, and other quality documents. Represent Quality Control on cross‑functional projects, teams, and meetings with Operations, Tech Ops, R&D, Regulatory, and external stakeholders. Coordinate with LIMS Administrator on LIMS development to ensure system functionality and accuracy. Manage and liaise with outside contract laboratories. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, microbiology, biology, or a related science (advanced degree preferred). ASQ or Six Sigma/Lean certification with continuous process improvement experience (preferred). 7‑10 years of experience in a consumer‑packaged goods company (nutraceutical, dietary supplement, or pharmaceutical testing laboratory operations) with at least 5 years of supervisory experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrated success as a leader and developer of technical staff. Strong teamwork and leadership skills to facilitate interaction with cross‑functional team members (Manufacturing, QA, QC, Regulatory, and external vendors). Excellent project, organizational, computer, statistical, and time‑management skills. Clear written and verbal communication skills. Comprehensive knowledge of physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis, manufacturing operations, and current Good Laboratory Practices. Knowledge of good laboratory safety practices and ability to manage a QC laboratory safely in accordance with SOPs and GMP. Thorough understanding of laboratory equipment operation (HPLC, ICP, spectrophotometer, GC, FTIR, dissolution apparatus). Experience with lab information systems (LIMS) preferred. Physical Requirements Continuous manipulation skills, walking, standing. Exposure to minor health hazards and constant exposure to disagreeable elements. Performance requires frequent, intermittent, intense, and/or close attention to detail. Supervisory Responsibility Direct supervisory responsibility for 1‑5 employees and indirect supervisory responsibility for up to 50 employees. Compensation & Benefits National Target Base Pay Range: $100,000.00 – $166,000.00. California and NewYork metro: $110,000.00 – $184,000.00. Compensation may include annual performance bonus, medical, dental, vision benefits, 401(k) match, and other wellness benefits.
