Non-Interim Position Dates: 07/27/2026 - 05/27/2027 Purpose Statement The job of Counselor - High School is performed to provide support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for implementing the ASCA National Standards for students with assigned pupils; managing schedules and placement of assigned students; providing course curriculum, information and recommendations to students and parents; and assisting in developing goals and plans for achievement. This job reports to the Site Administrator. Essential Functions Analyzes transcripts to ensure compliance with graduation requirements. Assists students in developing their Educational/Career Action Plan to support high school and post–high‑school goals. Assists students with financial aid, college materials, applications, online registration, scholarships, etc., to secure post‑graduation academic and/or vocational opportunities. Collaborates with internal and external personnel (colleges, middle schools, site personnel, etc.) to implement and maintain services and programs. Coordinates with teachers, college and university personnel, resource specialists, and community partners to provide or receive requested information and make recommendations. Provides counseling to students, parents, and guardians—including crisis counseling, social‑emotional counseling, academic counseling, NCAA advisement, mid‑year graduation, etc.—to enhance student success. Develops special programs and activities such as College Night, Peer Tutoring Program, PVCC Day, Senior Awards Night, Freshman Orientation, Financial Aid Night, etc., to assist students in transition to career, training, and continuing education. Monitors student progress (classroom academics, PVONLINE courses, dual enrollments, etc.) to identify issues and take appropriate action for increasing success. Participates in meetings (IEP, RED, MET, 504, etc.) to convey and/or gather required information. Prepares materials (correspondence, financial and scholarship information, new student packets, surveys, newsletters, etc.) to document activities and provide reference. Presents information (Career Readiness, Career Exploration, Scholarships, AVID, PVONLINE, etc.) to communicate information and/or gain feedback. Proctors standardized assessments and exams (AIMS, PSAT, PLAN, ASVAB, AP exams, etc.) to ensure security and integrity of the exam process. Reports health and safety issues to the assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors, etc.) to maintain student safety and compliance with regulations. Researches program eligibility requirements (financial aid, college eligibility, etc.) to provide up‑to‑date, accurate counsel. Responds to inquiries from internal and external parties (staff, parents, students, visitors, public agencies, etc.) to provide information, facilitate communication, and/or give direction. Schedules student classes to secure appropriate placement and meet graduation and college eligibility requirements. Supervises student programs (Peer Mediation, Teen AA, Peer Tutoring, etc.) to monitor performance and achieve curriculum objectives. Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Skills required include applying assessment instruments, preparing and maintaining accurate records, planning and managing projects, and using pertinent software applications. Knowledge required includes algebra, geometry, interpreting highly technical information, writing technical materials, speaking persuasively, analyzing situations, and knowledge of child development stages and assessment instruments. Abilities required include scheduling numerous activities, gathering and collating data, using equipment, working independently with others, analyzing data, operating equipment, handling diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines, setting priorities, working as part of a team, and tolerating frequent interruptions. Responsibility Works under limited supervision using standardized practices and methods; leads, guides, and coordinates others; may utilize resources from other units to perform job functions. Work Environment The role requires some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, and fine finger dexterity. Generally the job involves 30% sitting, 10% walking, and 60% standing, with minimal temperature variations. Experience and Education Job‑related experience is desired. A master’s degree in a job‑related area is preferred.
