California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the University Library. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 22-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. Cal Poly Pomona, a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution, stands as a national leader in promoting social mobility , and was placed among the 25 top institutions in the country in awarding bachelor's degrees to minoritized students by Diverse Issues in Higher Education . In 2022, the campus launched the Black Thriving Initiative recognizing that Cal Poly Pomona's future as a university is linked to the success of its Black community. More information about our Principles of Community can be found here .

The Cal Poly Pomona campus is located less than 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles at the intersection of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It is within an hour's drive of beaches, mountains and deserts. Over half of Cal Poly Pomona students are first-generation college students, 70% receive financial aid, and 42% are low-income students. The university enrolls 57% percent of historically underrepresented students. Our diverse student body identifies as 54% Hispanic/Latinx, 21% Asian, 13% White, 4% two or more races, 3% unknown, 2% African American/Black, 2% International, less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and less than 1% Native American. The library serves as one of the key public spaces on campus for students to work, study, and collaborate. The library faculty and staff strive to create a welcoming, inclusive, and innovative learning environment that fosters exploration, discovery, research, and scholarship while offering students a variety of study spaces and technology to support their academic studies.

Research & Instruction Services (RIS) Unit

The Research and Instruction Services (RIS) unit provides essential services that support student learning and faculty research through information literacy, curriculum-integrated instruction, and specialized research assistance. As the primary connection between academic departments and the University Library, RIS librarians promote information literacy campuswide and help support and assess student learning and success through instruction in a wide range of classes. RIS librarians collaborate with teaching faculty to develop course-integrated instruction grounded in the Association of College and Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

RIS librarians offer workshops, online tutorials, and in-depth research consultations, and partner with faculty to design and revise research assignments that are current and aligned with library resources. RIS librarians also create subject and course guides that respond to student research needs and integrate research skills and other information literacy competencies across courses and programs. RIS librarians act as a liaison to academic departments to support curriculum needs, collection development, and faculty outreach. Through liaison responsibilities, RIS librarians develop, maintain, and evaluate library collections, ensuring they meet user needs through strategic acquisition and weeding.

Position Description

The Student Success Librarian plays a crucial role in the University Library's Research & Instruction Services (RIS) Unit. The Student Success Librarian is a newly established position within the University Library that reports to the Dean of the University Library. In support of CPP's commitment to enhancing undergraduate retention and academic success, the librarian will leverage expertise in adaptive and responsive teaching and learning, instructional design, student development, innovative outreach, and community-building to guide students in navigating academic and library resources that foster flexible, career-integrated learning and lifelong learning. This role involves active collaboration with faculty, departments, and campus programs, along with a strong understanding of the broader institutional context, to advance student success and workforce preparedness. The librarian will serve as the primary liaison to the Departments of Communication, Economics, English & Modern Languages, and Philosophy within the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences.

The Student Success Librarian provides general research assistance and in-depth research consultations to individuals in-person and virtually. The librarian teaches course-integrated instruction sessions in assigned disciplinary areas, designs and delivers library-sponsored workshops on disciplinary-specific and general topics. The Student Success Librarian is responsible for direct outreach to assigned disciplinary areas and to faculty in related disciplines, participates in library outreach activities, and helps to design and deliver public programming. In addition, the subject librarian facilitates communication between the University Library and assigned departments in support of student success and faculty productivity.
