Registered Nurse (Outpatient Mental Health)

Summary The Nurse III Outpatient Mental Health (MH) Registered Nurse (RN) executes position responsibilities to improve patient and organizational outcomes. The psychiatric MH RN executes their position duties by providing patient-centered and recovery-oriented care and maintaining self-awareness while caring for patients living with MH conditions. Qualifications English Language Proficiency: Proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduated from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency, accredited by ACEN or CCNE. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration. Foreign education credit requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA. Current full, active, unrestricted registration in a US state, territory, Commonwealth (including Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: candidates may be appointed at the entry step of the grade on a 120‑day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure. Grade determinations and required levels described in the qualification standard (links omitted for brevity). Preferred Experience: 3–5 years recent nursing, 3–5 years in mental health. Physical requirements: lifting, prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, stooping, walking, reaching, repetitive motion, climbing stairs. Computer proficiency: typing and Microsoft systems. Mental/sensory requirements: logical thinking, processing and retaining information, reading, recall, reasoning, complex problem solving, hearing, clear speech, writing, keyboarding, phone and video connectivity use. Compliance with VHA‑mandated vaccinations and meeting employee health requirements. Responsibilities Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assesses – plans – implements – evaluates care based on age‑specific components. Assumes coordination of care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Follows procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care. Provides face‑to‑face patient care, uses available IT software and equipment for virtual visits, and timely accurate navigation of and documentation in electronic medical records. Handles multiple priorities in a steady to fast‑paced environment, adapting to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. Uses personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials. Works with persons with communication difficulties, cognitive loss including dementia, behavioral challenges, altered mentation, and stressed caregivers. Collaborates with multiple stakeholders.
