About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Surgical ICU Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Surgical ICU Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year of ICU experience License: Active Illinois RN license or confirmation of application process Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: ICU experience, Level I trauma experience Description: Local rate applies to clinicians with permanent addresses within a specified distance. There is a call-off policy with no penalty or shift penalties. Common diagnoses include post-surgical patients, open abdomens, multi-system trauma, and endovascular cases. The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:2, but can also be 1:1 or 1:3. RNs are required to titrate medications. Common titratable and set rate drips include pressors, sedation, paralytics, and insulin. A charge nurse and house supervisor are available each shift, with the charge nurse taking an assignment when staffing allows. Patient care technicians assist with a ratio of 1:10. Clientists and intensivists are available 24/7 in-house, and telemedicine support is also available. Respiratory therapy is available in the ICU 24/7. Monitor technicians are present, but nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting strips. Shifts are scheduled from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. Weekend requirements include six shifts in a six-week period. Holidays are required every other holiday. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating to lower-level care units may occur, with a typical assignment of three patients on a step-down unit and five to six patients in general medicine. There is no specific dress code for scrubs. Unit-specific orientation includes training on documentation and procedures. Charting is done using the EPIC system. A BSN is not required. This position is in an acute care setting.
