CWA Local 9009, known as Alphabet Workers Union, is building worker power across Alphabet’s entire workforce ecosystem, bringing together full-time employees and temporary, vendor, and contract workers across job classifications, class barriers, and company-imposed divisions. As the first Union organizing workers at a major tech company, we use a direct-join, member-led model that empowers workers to organize and take action. Job Description: 
CWA Local 9009 is seeking an experienced union leader with a proven record of growing membership and member engagement. The Director of Organizing will shape and lead the next phase of CWA Local 9009’s growth, overseeing a nationwide organizing team and developing strategies to build worker power across Alphabet. The Director is an exempt position that reports to the union Executive Board and leads its organizing program and staff. The Director oversees a nationwide team of 5-10 organizers and leads strategic, integrated, pre-majority direct-join organizing campaigns. This role requires up to 25% travel across the continental US to support staff, cultivate member leaders, and advance organizing campaigns.

The Director develops and implements the union’s strategic organizing plan. This includes creating work plans, setting goals and metrics, and developing systems to support staff organizers and develop member leaders. The Director also oversees systems for addressing member grievances and legal matters and collaborates closely with the union’s operations staff. The Director ensures clear, consistent communication between the Executive Board, member leaders, and staff. The Director makes recommendations to the Executive Board regarding hiring, performance management, discipline, and promotions and manages the organizing budget. This role requires sound judgment, strategic leadership, strong people-management skills, and a deep commitment to the union’s vision. 

The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience in the following areas: 

1. Strategic Planning and Campaign Implementation 
   • Develop the union’s growth strategy and theory of change.
   • Lead strategic organizing campaigns by engaging members through issue assessment and prioritization, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
   • Identify opportunities for growth and strategic leverage that strengthen the union’s power and build towards recognition and meaningful bargaining power.
2. Leadership, Staff Development and Management 
   • Communicate a clear, compelling vision that motivates staff and member leaders.
   • Develop and implement strategies to engage members and foster leadership at all levels of the organization.
   • Translate organizational goals into clear staff work plans, expectations, and measures of progress.
   • Supervise, coach, and develop staff through regular feedback, training, support, and professional development.
   • Build a healthy, collaborative staff culture across a geographically distributed team by fostering trust, clear communication, shared accountability, and connection.
3. Collaboration with Union Leadership 
   • Provide strategic guidance, training, and support to the Executive Board.
   • Make well-supported recommendations to the Executive Board on personnel matters, including hiring, retention, discipline, dismissal, and promotion.

Requirements: 

• Minimum of 8 years of experience in member-led union organizing.
• At least 5 years of experience supervising organizing staff at a labor union.
• Demonstrated ability to develop strategy, translate goals into effective plans, and exercise sound judgment and discretion.
• Proven experience planning and leading strategic campaigns and achieving significant membership growth, ideally at a large corporate employer.
• Strong knowledge of labor law and organizing strategies, particularly pre-majority and direct-join organizing models.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead teams, collaborate across diverse groups, and build a healthy, cohesive staff culture.
• Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% across the continental U.S. to support campaigns and build relationships with staff and members.
• Excellent verbal, written, and social communication skills.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including regular evening meetings and occasional weekends.

Salary, Benefits, and Location:

• This is a remote position based in an area with a high concentration of Alphabet workers, preferably New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, or Seattle. The Director will work primarily from a home office, with regular in-person work at or near Alphabet worksites. Up to 25% travel is required.
• The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $145,000, commensurate with experience.
