Location: Onsite in Mansfield, TX or Duquesne, PA

Employment Status: Full Time | Direct Hire

Compensation: $90,000$120,000 per year + Annual Bonus Eligibility

Travel: Up to 25% local travel

On-Call: May participate in an on-call rotation based on location and project requirements

The Opportunity


The Controls Engineer III supports the Design Team in designing, integrating, and commissioning automation and control systems. This role emphasizes front-end engineering, including control system architecture, industrial networking, HMI/SCADA graphics, instrumentation, and PLC programming.


The engineer will lead assigned project scopes from design through commissioning while providing field support during deployment. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, an investigative mindset, and the ability to adapt to new technologies and integration challenges.


What You'll Do

  • Design control system architectures, industrial networks, panel configurations, and automation hardware.
  • Develop and troubleshoot Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC applications using Studio 5000 / Logix Designer.
  • Develop and standardize HMI/SCADA graphics using platforms such as Ignition, FactoryTalk View, and AVEVA.
  • Specify and integrate field instrumentation, including flow, pressure, temperature, transmitters, and I/O.
  • Interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, instrumentation data sheets, and control system documentation.
  • Lead and support FAT, startup, commissioning, testing, and field deployment activities.
  • Troubleshoot controls, networking, and integration issues and develop solutions for non-standard challenges.
  • Develop network drawings, system specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, customers, subcontractors, and commissioning teams.
  • Lead assigned engineering tasks, communicate project risks, and deliver work on schedule and within scope.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and support continuous improvement in engineering standards and processes.
  • Follow Thermo Systems QMS and maintain high standards for safety, quality, and engineering accuracy.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, or system integration.
  • Experience with front-end controls design, system architecture, PLC programming, and commissioning.
  • Strong Rockwell/Allen-Bradley and Studio 5000 / Logix Designer experience, including online debugging.
  • HMI/SCADA development experience with Ignition, FactoryTalk View, AVEVA, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with industrial networking, control hardware, panel architectures, and network drawings.
  • Working knowledge of field instrumentation, I/O mapping, and instrumentation specifications.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to independently investigate unfamiliar technologies and adapt to new hardware and software.
  • Willingness to travel up to 60% and provide field support as required.
