DESCRIPTION:

The Phlebotomist/EKG Technician is responsible for collecting routine and stat blood specimens from patients and designated employees.  Phlebotomist will be responsible for processing the blood specimens and other body specimens as ordered by a physician; this includes maintaining pertinent records and files, and the ability to work closely with personnel at the contract laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Receives requests for laboratory work from nursing units.

• Obtains blood specimens from patients on the nursing units. Unit protocol for collection will be followed for patient preparation and education.

• Informs Charge Nurse of any tests not done or incomplete and indicate reason.

• Processes all specimens including urine cultures, cytology, and any others according to contract laboratory protocol.

• Process patient lab forms and submits for billing.  Process appropriate contract laboratory requisitions.

• Prepares specimen and appropriate paperwork for transport to laboratory.

• Receives written reports from laboratory and distributes to designated units.

• Confers with immediate supervisor, or designee, when problems arise so they may be dealt with in a timely manner.

• Documents in progress notes, the type specimen drawn or if patient refuses.

• Responsible for ordering, receiving and maintaining all supplies related to the laboratory.

• Responsible for environment, safety, infection control and cleanliness.

• Submits Quality Assurance studies to the Director of Nursing, and QI Coordinator on a monthly basis.

• Follow all Hospital policies and procedures including mandatory in services and employee health programs.

• Performs EKGs and send to physician for reading.

• Completes special projects or other related work as requested or required.

• Shows ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.                        

• Demonstrates ability to work with others.

• Adapt to changing situations or work assignments.

• Demonstrates willingness to rotate to other areas of hospital within the limits of preparation and skill level.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

• High School graduate

• National Certification in Phlebotomy - Required

• 1-2 years' experience in a hospital setting as Phlebotomist
