Irrigation Tech

Description The Irrigation Technician installs and maintains irrigation systems that keep crops, parks, gardens, and various green spaces watered. This position is adept at operating different kinds of heavy machinery such as trenchers, soil compactors, and other equipment. Job Summary As part of a dedicated team, the Technician ensures efficient irrigation system operation through installation, maintenance, and repair, and provides guidance to junior staff. Duties and Responsibilities Conduct detailed irrigation inspections and document repairs and upgrades. Clean decorative water features. Excavate and trench using shovels and other excavation hand tools. Backfill and compact to minimize spoil and signs of excavation. Maintain work areas and jobsite in a clean, safe, and hazard‑free condition. Maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment in a clean, organized, and well‑stocked condition. Train and mentor personnel in lower positions on technical irrigation topics. Properly adjust all sprinkler types and nozzles, and replace sprinklers, including the use of check valves and PRS. Select and install conventional and HE nozzles, considering precipitation rates. Solvent cement weld PVC according to ASME B31.1 bonding procedures. Repair lateral lines under all conditions. Repair PVC and ductile iron mainlines up to 6 inches. Replace all types of irrigation valves. Clean and rebuild valves upon special customer request. Conduct annual seasonal startup inspections and drip conversions. Perform winterization seasonal tasks. Install controllers (conventional and smart). Program conventional controllers. Install rain sensors, soil moisture sensors, flow meters, and master valves, including hydrometers. Complete water‑saving upgrades. Operate excavation equipment, including walk‑behind trencher and soil compactor. Diagnose shorts, open circuits, and partial shorts with a multimeter. Use a station master to activate and diagnose valves and tone wires. Trace underground wires and locate ground faults with a ground‑fault locator. Troubleshoot, identify, and repair conventional electrical irrigation problems. Record materials and labor used for each job. Wear proper PPE and follow all safety rules. Education and Experience Minimum 1–5 years of landscape irrigation experience. Preferable knowledge of communication cable and radio communication/hardware. Knowledge of mechanical fittings and gate valves. Understanding of irrigation controller hardware. Experience with two‑wire systems. Preference for brass valve rebuild knowledge. Resourceful, quick learner with a desire for knowledge. Self‑starter. Detail oriented. Valid TCEQ Irrigator's Tech license. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Training provided; pay negotiable. Physical Demands and Requirements Able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently or constantly for moving objects. Must be at least 18 years old (21 for operating company‑provided vehicles). Possess strong stamina and work outdoors in various weather, including extreme heat and cold. Operate landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and edgers safely. Bend, stoop, kneel, twist, stand, walk continuously, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods. Use a variety of hand tools (shovels, rakes). Wear appropriate PPE (safety shoes, high‑visibility clothing, hand protection, eye protection, hearing and head protection). For BrightView fleet vehicle operators, a valid driver’s license and a state‑issued motor‑vehicle record check are required. Work flexible hours, including weekends or holidays if needed. Maintain required medications for allergic reactions. Work Environment Outdoors or indoors in moderate to extreme weather (above 100°F or below 32°F, varying humidity). Extended periods in direct sunlight. Near automotive traffic, bodies of water, fumes, dust, and mechanical or electrical hazards. Extended loud noise exposure.
