Staff Electrical Engineer

Staff Electrical Engineer role at Illumina overseeing the complete electrical-system lifecycle of high-performance DNA sequencing instruments. Lead technical projects from development through end-of-life, manage component obsolescence, and serve as subject-matter expert for server-class compute hardware while mentoring engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end lifecycle management projects for component obsolescence, redesign, qualification, and product release
• Oversee electrical-system lifecycle of NovaSeq X and 6K sequencers from development through end-of-life
• Serve as technical owner for HPC/Compute Engine server subsystem, including qualification and cost-reduction initiatives
• Troubleshoot server-class hardware issues and translate findings into sustainable design and sourcing actions
• Mentor and guide senior and junior engineers, leading team growth and supporting leadership succession

Requirements

• Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years experience, or Master's with 6+ years, or PhD with 3+ years
• Proficiency in PCB design tools (Altium Designer or equivalent) with high-speed, high-density design experience
• Deep knowledge of x86 server platforms, CPU/memory architecture, NVMe SSDs, PCIe, BIOS, and boot behavior
• Demonstrated experience leading full-lifecycle management of electronic systems in complex products
• Strong analytical problem-solving skills with ability to rapidly acquire new technical domains
• Understanding of microcontroller, processor, and FPGA architectures with firmware/HDL familiarity
• Test engineering principles knowledge and fixture design experience
