Advanced EMT | Basic Life Support Technician

General Summary

The Advanced EMT is responsible for assessing patients, managing airways, using automatic defibrillators, and assisting patients with medication administration. This role requires safe ambulance driving and thorough knowledge of local routes. In settings offering advanced care, the EMT supports paramedics by following their direction and maintaining scope of practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assess and reassess patient conditions, providing rescue interventions per established protocols when direct medical control is unavailable.
• Apply critical thinking to evaluate patient needs and plan care accordingly.
• Delegate tasks to First Responders within their scope and evaluate their performance.
• Collaborate effectively with healthcare team members and emergency service providers to coordinate patient care.
• Perform airway management techniques such as King Airway insertion, C-PAP, oral/nasal airways, and Autovent.
• Apply splinting methods including ladder, SAM, board, and traction splints, and implement spinal motion restriction.
• Provide concise patient handoff reports to receiving medical staff.
• Operate ambulance safely and efficiently following policy guidelines.
• Adhere to infection control procedures and safe patient handling techniques.
• Document patient care accurately using appropriate reporting forms.
• Communicate clearly with other departments and emergency services.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from an approved state EMT program is mandatory.

Experience

One year of EMT experience preferred but not required.

Certifications and Licenses

Current state EMT license required. BLS and PHTLS certifications required, with PHTLS and Class E driver's license to be obtained within six months of hire.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role demands considerable mental focus and physical stamina, including lifting up to 50 lbs, frequent walking, standing, sitting, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Extended driving and managing stressful, traumatic situations are also part of the job.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and potentially hostile individuals. Minimal physical discomfort is expected.
