Boiler Technician

The Boiler Technician responds to service calls for no heat and no hot water issues and provides expert service, troubleshooting, and repair for commercial boilers and volume water heaters exceeding 2 million BTUs. This role focuses on diagnosing and repairing atmospheric and forced-draft burner systems, wiring and commissioning commercial boiler control systems, and maintaining related mechanical equipment in commercial and industrial environments while following strict safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Respond to service calls involving no heat and no hot water issues in commercial and industrial facilities.
• Service, troubleshoot, and repair commercial boilers and volume water heaters exceeding 2 million BTUs.
• Diagnose and repair atmospheric and forced-draft burner systems to restore safe and efficient operation.
• Wire, configure, and commission commercial boiler control systems and associated mechanical equipment.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair boilers, pumps, water heaters, valves, controls, and related mechanical systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance on boilers, heating systems, and associated equipment to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Interpret and use wiring diagrams and mechanical schematics when performing repairs and commissioning work.
• Apply strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and critical thinking skills to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
• Operate safely in commercial and industrial environments, consistently following company and industry safety standards.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with customers regarding findings, recommended repairs, and system status.
• Document work performed, parts used, and system conditions in a clear and accurate manner.
• Collaborate with team members and support a safety-focused, team-oriented culture while working independently in the field.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 5 years of experience working on steam boilers, hydronic boilers, and volume water heating boilers.
• 5+ years of commercial boiler experience, including large-capacity and high-BTU systems.
• Hands-on experience servicing commercial heating systems over 2 million BTUs.
• Proven ability to service, troubleshoot, and repair commercial boilers and volume water heaters.
• Ability to diagnose and repair atmospheric and forced-draft burner systems.
• Experience wiring and commissioning boiler and mechanical equipment, including control systems.
• Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and critical thinking skills for complex mechanical and control issues.
• Knowledge of pumps, valves, controls, compressors, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
• Experience with preventive maintenance, repair, and facilities maintenance activities.
• Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and mechanical schematics.
• Comfort working independently in field service environments while managing time and tasks effectively.
• Strong customer service and communication skills when interacting with commercial and industrial clients.
• Ability to safely perform physical work in commercial environments, including at customer sites.
• Valid driver's license.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Commercial heating systems experience strongly preferred.
• Experience servicing large-capacity boiler systems in commercial and industrial settings.
• HVAC, mechanical systems, and maintenance repair.
• Experience with compressors, plumbing, and facilities maintenance is beneficial.
• Exposure to EPA Universal certification and related environmental and safety practices is a plus.
• Experience performing preventive maintenance programs on boilers and mechanical equipment.
• Demonstrated safety-focused mindset in all aspects of field service work.
• Comfort working in a collaborative, team-oriented culture while also functioning independently.
• Interest in ongoing professional development, training, and skills advancement.

Work Environment

Work takes place primarily at commercial and industrial customer sites throughout the Chicago area, with a strong focus on field-based service. You travel to customer locations to service boilers, heating systems, pumps, burners, and water heating equipment. The environment is safety-focused and emphasizes a collaborative, team-oriented culture, while still expecting technicians to work independently and make sound decisions in the field. You regularly work around mechanical equipment, controls, and piping systems, following established safety procedures and industry standards throughout your day.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Chicago, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $83,000.00 - $104,000.00/yr. $40-$50/hour $5,000-$15,000 annual bonus potential Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance 401(k) with company match Paid time off Company vehicle, fuel card, uniforms, and tools Paid training and professional development
