Diagnostic Medical Sonographer I, II, III

Under general supervision, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures in one or more specialties of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) on all age groups for outpatient, inpatient and emergency/trauma patients.

Job duties include performing diagnostic imaging procedures in one (1) or more specialties including but not limited to obstetrical, gynecological, abdominal, vascular work, small parts, musculoskeletal, neuro-sonography and neonatal; performing portable scans and assisting in procedures; operating a variety of diagnostic ultrasound equipment and monitoring and maintaining medical equipment; assessing general patient condition; documenting procedures and events in the patient's medical record and departmental logs, in accordance with regulatory, hospital and departmental standards; recognizing and documenting pathology; reviewing pertinent history in patient's chart; transporting patients using gurneys, wheelchairs and beds; scheduling procedures and patients; answering departmental telephones; coordinating patient flow; training medical and technical personnel such as radiology residents and students in ultrasound; participating in departmental Quality Improvement efforts; and performing other related duties as required.

Minimum qualifications vary by level:

Level I: Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in one (1) specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; must obtain a valid certification and registration with the ARDMS in a second specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health within six (6) months of appointment; and possession of valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.

Level II: One (1) year of experience working as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer; valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in two (2) specialties used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; and possession of valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.

Level III: Three (3) years of experience working as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer; valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in three (3) or more specialties used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; and possession of valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.
