Assistant United States Attorney

Summary The United States Attorney for the District of Utah is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes committed within the district. The Office also defends the United States, its agencies, officers, and employees in civil actions; enforces the regulatory authority of federal agencies, and recovers funds from individuals who violate criminal, civil and regulatory laws. The Office is divided into four divisions: the Administrative Division, Appellate Division, Civil Division and Criminal Division. Duties The U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Utah is seeking an experienced attorney to fill an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in the Criminal Division of its St. George office. AUSAs in the Criminal Division advise federal law enforcement agents on criminal investigations, present criminal cases to the grand jury, prepare and argue a broad range of motions, and try criminal cases before the United States District Court. Applicants should be capable of handling a variety of significant and complex criminal prosecutions, including securities fraud, financial crime, violent crime, narcotics and national security. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Residency Requirements Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Selective Service If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. See Conditions of Employment You must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information. Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by their entry on duty date. Qualifications Applicants must have a J.D. degree, must be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post J.D. legal or other relevant experience. Ideal qualifications include at least 5 or more years of post J.D. litigation experience. The attorney selected to fill the vacant position must also be willing to become an active member of the Utah State Bar and the bar of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah within twelve months of appointment. Required Qualifications Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case. Applicants must demonstrate superior oral advocacy and writing skills as well as strong research skills, interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Applicants must possess excellent communication and courtroom skills and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and agencies. Applicants must have a demonstrative capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree. Salary Information Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $171,487 plus locality pay where authorized.
