Certified Code Enforcement Officer

Salary $31.12 - $44.24/hour; $5,394.13 - $7,668.27/month; $64,729.60 - $92,019.20/year Introduction This is a bargaining unit position involving complex, technical structural inspections of existing structures and related code enforcement. Responsibilities Perform building inspections of residential, commercial, and other structures Inspect foundations, concrete slabs, beams, framing, walls, floors, electrical, plumbing, stairways, insulation, roofing, and related structural components for integrity and code compliance Conduct elevation and drainage inspections to ascertain compliance with flood control ordinances Conduct secondary inspections after repairs have been made Prepare demolition orders, securing orders, vacate orders, and property maintenance abatements as necessary Inspect improved and unimproved properties for compliance with environmental standards, zoning, land‑use, and sign ordinances Receive, record, and investigate code violation complaints Explain code violations to owners/occupants and guide them toward corrective action Maintain inspection records, prepare reports, and utilize computer software for research and report generation Inspect sites for tree removal, site clearing, and landscaping permits Verify licensing and permitting status of persons performing work Issue notices of violation, parking tickets, and civil citations; conduct re‑inspections and provide testimony in court Ensure vehicle and electronic equipment are in proper working condition Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Considerable knowledge of building construction methods and materials, building codes and ordinances, inspection procedures, and computer software operation Working knowledge of the layout of the City and its geography Ability to read and interpret construction plans, enforce codes with firmness, impartiality, and tact, follow instructions, prepare clear reports, present evidence in court, operate a lightweight motor vehicle, and establish effective relationships with employees and the public Physical Requirements Mostly standing; outdoors very frequently. Requires some use of computer, typing, and viewing a monitor. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school One (1) year of public‑contact work One (1) year of enforcement experience in standards and related codes Or an equivalent combination of training and experience Licenses or Certifications Valid Florida driver’s license ICC (International Code Council) Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification Examination and Drug Testing Evaluation of education and experience; drug testing is part of pre‑employment processing. Work Hours and Shift Requirements Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
