Deputy Associate Laboratory Director - Operations

Position Overview Responsible for providing leadership for a major science and technology area consisting of multi-disciplinary activities and may serve as a key member of the Directorate leadership team working directly with Associate Lab Directors or other senior managers. Provides a combination of strategic, operational and technical/functional leadership to staff within or across divisions. Key Responsibilities Lead directorate-wide activities to ensure the sustained operational excellence of Photon Sciences, the Advanced Photon Source, and its user program. Develop operational strategies and plans that align with short-term and long-term objectives of PSC and Argonne Laboratory. Oversee the APS Engineering Support Division, Project Management, Finances and HR, and coordinate with the Accelerator Systems Division and X-ray Science Division. Provide organizational leadership for strategic and operational activities such as fiscal management, environment, safety, health & quality assurance, IT and systems planning, major infrastructure/space planning, workforce planning, quality program reporting, and directorate communications. Assure PSC’s success in meeting strategic and tactical performance requirements. Lead key initiatives, projects, and programs that are directorate-wide and collaborate with peers in other Argonne Directorates. Interact with sponsors, stakeholders, Collaborative Access Teams, customers, regulators, vendors, and facility affiliates. Serve as the primary interface with the Deputy Laboratory Director for Operations/COO and liaison to Laboratory Operations functions. Collaborate with APS Division Directors to secure necessary capabilities for sustained, high-reliability operations. Promote a safety culture and contribute to continuous improvement processes. Work with U.S. light sources and international partners to monitor and adapt to DOE and international trends. Qualifications Significant experience leading and managing operations within DOE complex, national laboratories, or large international organizations supporting science and technology. Comprehensive knowledge of DOE and laboratory policies, including environmental, safety and health policies. Experience with operations of a technical complex, including general and business operations oversight, leadership, and strategy. Experience with large-scale user facility or accelerator operations desirable. Demonstrated ability to lead change, deliver measurable results, and build strong relationships. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with ability to motivate multidisciplinary scientific and technical staff. Project management experience handling substantial, cross-functional, and mission-critical projects. Existing Q clearance or ability to obtain one preferred. Results-driven with a record of accomplishments characterized by integrity and ethical standards. Compensation and Benefits The expected hiring range for this position is $287,885.00 - $449,099.82. Pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on scope, responsibilities, qualifications, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay.
