Transportation Coordinator

Job Purpose Under limited supervision of the Director of Administrative Services, the Transportation Coordinator is responsible for planning, supervising, and overseeing the secure transportation of youth to and from appointments (medical, dental, court appearances, and other authorized locations). The position ensures compliance with agency policies, state and federal regulations, and safety standards while maintaining custody, control, and accountability of youth. It also provides leadership to transportation staff, manages operational logistics, and ensures the safety of staff, youth, and the public during all transport operations. Job Responsibilities Coordinate and provide secure transportation of youth between secure facilities, courts, medical appointments, and other authorized locations while maintaining safety, supervision, and compliance with agency policies. Ensure staffing levels are adequate by completing schedules and stay‑over rosters. Review transport orders and other court documentation prior to transport to determine needs based on youth’s level of security risk. Complete accurate and timely documentation related to transport, incidents, vehicle use, and youth transfers, and ensure subordinate staff do the same. Follow agency policies and procedures related to youth supervision, security protocols, documentation, use of restraints, and event reporting. Ensure proper and authorized restraints are used during transport of youth. Provide on‑the‑job training so staff follow proper transport procedures and remain vigilant to prevent escape, self‑harm, or harm to others. Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, or behavioral issues during transport, notifying supervisors and requesting assistance when needed. Follow emergency protocols and guide staff in vehicle searches, contraband suppression, and communication protocol. Inspect, maintain, and use transport vehicles and security equipment appropriately to support safe transportation. Submit documentation for vehicle inspections, maintenance, and mileage to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice motor pool and state fleet. Maintain availability during assigned on‑call periods to respond to urgent transportation needs, including after‑hours and emergency situations. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum and Additional Requirements A high school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience. Considerable knowledge of state law, secured‑facility rules, regulations, and requirements for the control of youth; compliance with South Carolina Child Abuse Statutes. Considerable knowledge of the purpose, methods, and operational practices of DJJ facilities. Lead and develop new officers. Knowledge of methods for instructing, handling, and supervising youth in various activities. Exercise good judgment and initiative in a variety of situations. Build healthy relationships with youth and effectively communicate in order to promote respect, trust, and manage challenging behaviors in a professional manner. Complete required reports, including daily ERS Reports. Establish working relationships with employees. Maintain a valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a state vehicle. Preferred Qualifications 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license and a high school diploma or equivalent. At least 3 years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including at least 1 year of supervisory experience. Completion and maintenance of all required DJJ training courses; certified under Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) within six months of employment. 80% proficiency on the competency exam and possess supervisory and teaching skills. A bachelor’s degree in human services or criminal justice, accompanied by experience supervising, mentoring, and interacting with at‑risk youth.
