DIRECTOR, RISK MANAGEMENT

WORK OBJECTIVE: Responsible managerial and administrative work in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the risk management program. Directs insurance brokers, insurance carriers, actuaries, and independent adjusters. Responsible for managing catastrophic loss while ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.

The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. • Develops, recommends and supervises the administration of institutional policy of insurance and risk management, with continuous analysis of risks to be covered or self-assured, method of placement and allocation of premium costs to operating divisions. • Develops and establishes specifications, forms and rate acceptance for various types of insurance, contracts and insurance services, with responsibility for purchase and renewal through brokers or directly from underwriting companies. • Supervises and administers major insured losses (e.g., coordinating activities with appropriate managers, presenting claims for negotiations through brokers and carriers; supervising the responsibility of meeting reporting requirements and activity with carriers, public authorities, etc., with regard to arson, demolition, ecology, pollution and fire departments; administering the collection of insured settlements with adjusters and attorneys for advance settlements, promptness of settlements and distribution of proceeds; taking subrogation action where applicable). • Develops risk management written policies and procedures for staff use. • Recommends to the CFO, upper management and the Board of Commissioner, both maintenance and changes to insurance policies. • Evaluating risk management of operations by promotion of liaison with branches to determine new risks and operations, visiting locations as necessary for analysis of the risks and the changes required to minimize risks. • Oversees the certificate of insurance submission process for all tenants, construction, design, procurement and service providers. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of changes in insurance markets, insurance companies and new forms of insurance through other buyers of insurance, management services, brokers and agents, consultants, publications, and membership in professional groups. • Maintains relations with account executives of brokerage firms, with casualty adjusters, field claims, Workers' Compensation auditors and insurance engineers. • Correlates the investigation of major construction, improvements or fixed assets, planned acquisitions and mergers for rating engineering, and making insurance recommendations relative to preferred underwriting. • Maintains close working relationships with General Counsel, particularly in matters of major claims, insured lawsuits and indemnity clauses in contracts. • Provides insurance certification for vendors, customers, real estate and miscellaneous contractual need. • Performs a variety of other related minor duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of modern risk management, workers' compensation, and property, casualty and liability insurance. Considerable knowledge of the principles of insurance and insurance concepts, terminology, and practice, including coverage, costs, and claims procedures. Knowledge of accounting principles as they relate to risk management and insurance programs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, insurance carriers, and medical representatives and deal with public relations problems effectively and tactfully. Ability to plan, implement, and refine systems and procedures used to review, analyze, and control risk management objectives. Ability to present effective oral and written reports, including statistical and financial analyses.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in usual office conditions with rare exposure to disagreeable environmental factors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration or related field and seven (7) years responsible, senior-level experience in the development and administration of insurance, programs; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. An Associate of Risk Management or Chartered Property/Casualty Underwriter preferred.
