Assistant Professor of Small Ruminants

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at Oklahoma State University invites applications for an 11-month tenure-track position (75% teaching and 25% research) in small ruminants (sheep and goats) at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position carries the expectation of excellence in teaching and research commensurate with the land grant mission of Oklahoma State University.

Position Description

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the department’s teaching mission by (a) teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in animal science relative to their expertise and the needs of the department; (b) recruiting and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; (c) contributing to the scholarship of the profession through innovative teaching approaches, scholarly teaching and learning research, curriculum development, external grants/contracts, and other forms of scholarly effort; and (d) building strong, collaborative industry relationships for student internships and careers. In support of their research appointment the successful candidate will be expected to develop an applied research program utilizing the department's Sheep and Goat Center in an area that aligns with their training and expertise. Preference will be given to individuals with sheep and goat production experience. This person will be expected to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team with others in the department and division. The successful candidate will be expected to seek and secure extramural funding in support of their applied research program from industry, federal agencies, or other granting sources, as well as publish their research findings in appropriate scientific journals.

Qualifications

Requirements include a Ph.D. in Animal Science or a closely related field. Documented interest, experience and appreciation of production agriculture are required, along with a working knowledge of U.S. sheep and goat industries. Applicants must be committed to both teaching and research and qualify for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Preference will be given to individuals with excellent written and oral communications skills, excellent interpersonal skills, documented experience as a dedicated teacher with a passion for student success, and the ability to work in teams and assume leadership roles.

Employment Conditions

This position is to be filled by January 1, 2027, or as soon as a suitable candidate is identified. The position is an 11-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary and benefits are competitive and based on qualifications and experience. Retirement and long-term disability, medical, dental and life insurance programs are available to employees. Continuation of this position is subject to performance, needs, and available funding.

About the Department

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences has over 1230 undergraduate students, 48 M.S. and Ph.D. students, and 33 faculty. The department is home to nine undergraduate student organizations and seven competitive undergraduate judging teams.
