RN-Critical Care - Weekend Option -Days

Job Summary The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care during a patient's hospital stay in the Intensive Care Units. The RN assesses, manages, directs, and performs nursing activities using a patient‑centered approach while coordinating care with other disciplines. This position is a regular full‑time role at MO‑SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Responsibilities Perform comprehensive nursing assessment and reassessment, obtaining input from patients, families, and the interprofessional team. Document findings accurately and assess education and discharge needs. Age‑appropriate admission or transfer assessment, including family/guardian input when appropriate. Assessment of post‑operative or post‑invasive procedure patients. Documentation of pertinent observations, changes in condition, and response to care. Develop, coordinate, and evaluate a patient‑centered plan of care based on assessment data, diagnostic tests, physician orders, protocols, and standards of care. Identify short‑ and long‑term goals. Formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes. Incorporate evidence‑based practice into the care plan. Provide and document nursing interventions, collaborating with the care team and communicating changes in patient status. Administer medications and document per policy. Monitor and document IV fluids and parenteral nutrition. Provide patient/family education, discharge planning, and referral services. Clarify and acknowledge physician orders, including readback for telephone or verbal orders. Recognize patient condition changes and take nursing actions, involving family/guardian when appropriate. Follow infection control practices and use safe patient handling techniques. Document or communicate nursing care and patient condition changes. Evaluate effectiveness of care and modify the plan of care as needed. Report significant changes in clinical parameters immediately to physicians and other team members. Investigate problems, suggest solutions, and work toward resolution. Report variations from care or treatment per policy. Provide specialized care to patients at high risk for injury. Restraint Care: Initiate/evaluate alternatives, apply restraints, monitor response, provide specified care, consult peers, and document thoroughly. Pain Management: Assess pain, incorporate cultural or spiritual beliefs, implement prevention and treatment techniques, and involve patients and families in planning. Abuse Assessment: Recognize abuse criteria, report concerns to appropriate authorities, and take safety actions. Demonstrate accountability for professional practice. Adhere to quality standards, policies, and protocols. Participate in learning experiences to enhance competence. Maintain currency with hospital/unit information, policies, and procedures; attend meetings and committees. Adapt positively to changing work demands and support peers. Interact professionally with coworkers, patients, families, and the healthcare team. Orient and precept new employees. Maintain a collaborative team approach. Serve as a resource to colleagues and patients. Supervise and teach students or new staff nurses. Ensure safety and infection control. Practice standard precautions and dispose of hazardous waste per guidelines. Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment; keep spaces clutter‑free and follow hand hygiene. Use safe patient handling equipment. Report risk management concerns; complete all mandatory annual requirements (license, BLS/ALS, TB screening, vaccination, ethics, safety, etc.). Provide service excellence to patients and families. Demonstrate care, courtesy, and responsiveness. Communicate effectively, maintain confidentiality, and provide quality handoff reports. Use resources wisely, recommend efficiency improvements, and contribute to patient satisfaction through AIDET and institutional commitments. Incorporate performance improvement and evidence‑based practice. Assist in developing and implementing unit goals. Maintain current practice initiatives; participate in data collection, performance improvement teams, and research activities. Contribute to quality indicators and performance plans. Provide age‑appropriate care aligned with the patient population served. Apply knowledge of growth and development. Interpret age‑specific data and involve families in decisions. Deliver services appropriate to the age group (adult, geriatric). Offer cost‑effective services. Use resources efficiently, document chargeable supplies, prioritize tasks, and complete work on time. Perform additional related duties as assigned or requested by supervisors. Qualifications Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri. Minimum of one year of registered nurse experience required. Hands‑on experience in an intensive care setting preferred. Demonstrated ability to assess, document, and manage complex patient care. Knowledge of infection control, pain management, restraint use, and abuse assessment. Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Commitment to ongoing professional development and performance improvement. Valid BLS and other certification requirements as per state regulations. Work Conditions & Physical Requirements Exposure to blood‑borne diseases and other hazards. Irregular hours, emergency and crisis situations. Occasional prolonged standing, walking, lifting, pushing, and transferring patients. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
