Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.
The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents.
The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their education and licensure.
The RN attends sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents.
They prepare a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepare the examining room and equipment.
The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
They communicate with the Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and emergencies.
The RN examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries and refers them to emergency rooms or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required by their condition.
Emergency procedures are performed as needed, and the RN notifies the Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures their needs are addressed.
They monitor inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.
The RN provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
They maintain a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies.
The RN utilizes established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures in decision-making while using independent judgment in meeting responsibilities.
Regular evaluation of the provision of medical services is conducted to prevent the inappropriate use or duplication of those services.
The RN maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
They assist the Health Service Administrator with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.
The RN closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
Audit of pharmacy use for adherence to formulary is performed as directed or required.
Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially concerning controlled substances, is mandatory.
The RN observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
They inspect the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents and securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment.
Health counseling and health education are provided on an individual or group basis as required.
The RN assists the Health Service Administrator in preparing and maintaining various standard records, reports, and logs, using appropriate grammar.
Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal documents is required.
The RN reviews, processes, and responds to lawsuits via corporate counsel and attends court hearings as necessary.
Facilitation of applicable accreditation of the medical program through efficient and appropriate medical services is part of the role.
Safety and accident reports are prepared and disseminated as required by policies and procedures, taking appropriate action in serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
