Ophthalmic Technician Supervisor

Involves the provision of integrated and accessible primary and specialty patient care services in a clinic or center environment. Care is provided by clinicians and assistants who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health care needs and developing a sustainable partnership with patients. Ensures optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and / or provision of patient care delivery in healthcare clinics or centers. Promotes shared decision-making at all levels to ensure a shared voice in practices, exchange of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved patient services. Management levels may also be responsible for clinic operations. (Note, when primary focus is clinical operations, see Ambulatory Administration job function.) Under general supervision of the Clinical Manager and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Technician Supervisor is responsible for the efficient organization and operation of all technical functions performed by ophthalmic technician and ophthalmic assistant personnel within the Department of Ophthalmology. This involves the provision of integrated and accessible primary and specialty patient care services in a clinic environment. Care is provided by clinicians who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health care needs and developing a sustainable partnership with patients. The technician supervisor ensures optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and / or provision of patient care delivery in healthcare clinics or centers. Promotes shared decision-making at all levels to ensure a shared voice in practices, exchange of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved patient services. The technician supervisor is responsible for daily clinic operations including supervision and assessment of technical duties and ensures compliance with all hospital policies and regulatory requirements. The Technician Supervisor monitors the quality of patient screening and workups, documentation, and communication with providers ensuring the quality of patient care delivery in assigned clinic(s) and serves as a role model. This position is responsible for technician hiring, orientation and training as well as scheduling, training, and implementation of new technologies within the full scope of clinical functions. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. This includes but is not limited to monitoring the facilities for patient and staff safety and initiating environmental or system improvements as needed. This role also supervises the maintenance of equipment, and monitoring and purchasing of supply chain. The Technician Supervisor consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor and is required to comply with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards. Key Responsibilities 50% – Supervises and facilitates the flow of patient care activities and coordination of the interdisciplinary clinical staff for assigned clinics / centers. Assures quality care and compliance with internal policy, external regulations and accepted practices across the continuum of care. May also supervise the fiscal and administrative operations. . Supports physicians in clinic modeling high quality technical expertise in patient work ups and procedures as well as non-invasive imaging and diagnostic testing as needed across all sites. 15% – Supervises the quality of employees meeting patient service standards and coordinates the clinic patient care services, resolves system issues, advises on work methods, manages scheduling based on patient census, and ensures compliance with internal procedures and external regulations. Mentors staff to communicate with patients regarding their conditions, treatments, and concerns. 10% – Evaluates subordinate staff and participates in decision-making on hiring, salary actions, disciplinary actions, performance ratings, and other human resources matters. Evaluates the competencies of clinical staff, according to scope of practice for the position. 5% – Assures completion of orientation and training of all patient care staff. Identifies and implements department specific educational opportunities for staff in collaboration with ambulatory administration. Assure work is performed in adherence to patient service standards, internal policies, external regulations, and quality / quantity expectations. 5% – Serves as a resource to clinic staff / Directors on patient care issues, new policies, and technology. Keeps staff informed of changes and resolves escalated issues. Recommends internal policies and procedures for quality improvement within the practice(s). May serves as a resource to staff for instructing patients on chronic diseases and self-care management, and with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and treatments. 5% – Participates in the performance of routine audits, accreditation, and licensing inspection readiness activities. Monitors services provided by support departments and collaborates to improve utilization and efficiency. 2% – Promotes a climate of effective teamwork, communication, and collaboration. Communicates regularly with management on practice activities and on pertinent operational or human resources issues. 2% – Encourages and assists staff in meeting professional goals using standard practice evaluation tools to identify areas for growth. Consults with clinical leaders and educators on developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies for performance improvement. 2% – Monitors and ensures that fiscal and material resources are managed according to budgetary parameters across assigned clinic(s) or center(s). 2% – Understands unit financial goals and educates staff of cost-containment strategies. Maintains unit expenses within budget. 2% – Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Two years of leadership experience Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise technicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a clinic(s) / center(s). Strong knowledge of practice operations In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations and problem solving with all levels of management, staff, consultants, and outside agencies Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, and to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner Minimum 4 years' experience as an Ophthalmic Technician Previous supervisory experience in Academic or Large clinical practice Knowledge of Joint Commission requirements The ability to work with intermittent standing and sitting for 8-9 hours Preferred Qualifications Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters Strong knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in clinic/center patient care Education, Licenses and Certifications Required Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent combination of experience / training Certified Ophthalmic Assistant ( COA) from IJCAHPO Current American Heart Association BLS certification Preferred Certified Ophthalmic Technician ( COT) from IJCAHPO Ophthalmic Photographers Society - Certified Retinal Angiographer ( CRA) Ophthalmic Photographers Society - Optical Coherence Tomography Certification ( OCT-C) About UCSF The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.
